Is this two-speed system anything akin to my two-stage system on my freez-drier that has two compressors? One to cool the coil, one to cool the air?

    nope
2 ton compressor for first stage, if the temperature does not reach set point in 11 minutes it stops and 4 ton compressor runs.

on the variable drive units they start at 25% of capacity and slowly or quickly ramp up to the needed capacity as the demand requires, then ramps back down as the demand decreases, drying the air better than any single speed some ever could

I hated those things when I used to have to deal with a 18 head Fujitsu at a retirement home. It was programmed to break every saturday night at 11 pm! I hope the new technology is better, like with Trane and Carrier. Ive finally gotten Rome on board to even take a peek into these systems now that I have some decent techs that can work on them, aside from myself

Rheem is riding on a name they built a long time ago when their units were actually good. what good is a warranty when the ac is constantly broken? I'm in the office right now in the heat, waiting for another warranty repair. I have a 15yr old Goodman at home, 4 ton, hasn't missed a beat.

Ive sold over $750,000 in RUUD's last year. Have had very little warranty issues. They have gotten much better.

But Goodman is jail for 16 years for DUI manslaughter, who's running the company?

Rheem 4 ton, 16 seer versus Carrier 3.5 ton, 15.5 seer, which would you go with if cost was pretty close?

I thought FPL gave you much larger rebate with 16+ seer units? That was the case when I replaced mine about 4 years ago.

4 ton 16 seer this time last year was $780, it is now $267

Got a Rheem on 10 years now, no problem either. Carrier stinks though.

just don't get YORK. They are built up north and not for the work load Florida puts on an A/C

This was a quote from an A/C repair guy

The customer called elsewhere and got every thing fixed in a week. 2 of 4 units broke
I was not born stupid, just had lots of practice

I will say York has issues more than most companies. We no longer have a York dealer in our area, however we do commercial work that the customer specs York. What a disaster! Lennox commercial as well.We installed three 25 ton Lennox package units per customer request. Within the first five years all six compressors failed and four of the six circuits plugged the drier with debris on a sealed system.

Here is the problem. I've been working on this stuff for 43 years, not selling, working. The commercial equipment all sucks today compared to yesterday. I have recently replaced forty year old commercial equipment. Also have forty year old equipment still running.

As far as high end residential equipment goes you are dealing with technology, with technology comes failures and obsolete products in a short period of time. Just look at energy management products. What is hot today is obsolete in a few short years.
