Another A/C question...

Rheem 4 ton, 16 seer versus Carrier 3.5 ton, 15.5 seer, which would you go with if cost was pretty close?

Not exactly sure whats there now. Her electric bill is extremely low but the unit is 12 years old and is almost completely rusted out and deteriorated.

if its a 3.5, stick with a 3.5 if it works and her electric bill is not that far out of whack

Do you have any preference as far as Rheem versus Carrier?

I sell both, have had equal the headaches with them. Rheem is a bit easier to deal with as far as warranty issues though

Stick with 3.5 if square footage has not increased.
    You can over a/c .

stick with one sized by a room by room heat load calculation using the latest version of the j manual 8th edition and the the AHRI listing of sensible capacity of the system proposed

I would go with Rheem. The carrier people did not even carry the proper parts and had no plans on making them until they got enough orders for it. If I remember it was the condenser. AC Man said he would get the part for me and even he ran into the same issue. Maybe they have fixed this problem now, but the Rheem keeps jugging along.

you have to log in on some god forsaken website and give your first borns social security number and a blood sample in order to process a warranty through Carrier.

If one of the mentioned AC units, is a dual speed, you might want to think twice about a dual speed unit. I had one(Lenox) installed, no real problem with it but when the warranty goes, it is more than double the cost to replace motors etc.

At least they all have 10 year warranty these days.

Yes, but after the 5 years everything warranty, something that looked like a small brass bulb with tubing went out on the air handler. With the so call diagnosis, $99 and the install, $375, AC issues can get expensive even under my 10 year warranty. Seemed a little high, but I know the company and they have always been upright. Maybe that is just the price for cold air LOL

the top successful companies in my area charge upwards of 1600 for that part installed, with the 150 dollar txv being covered under warranty. but that is how they have nice new vans, nice uniforms and techs on standby waiting for your call

    :Agree

Over sizing causes mold and a systemic building failure. Get a load calc run for a few hundred bucks and save yourself the grief of guessing.

Carrier GreenSpeed Variable Systems are my standard. They have been great for my projects and my client needs. No warranty issues either.

I get it. That's why I don't build average and I don't build in Ocala. It isn't one size fits all. Can't sell Ferraris at the Hyundai dealership.

However, in terms of a quality product with excellent performance options, they can't be beat.

Is this two-speed system anything akin to my two-stage system on my freez-drier that has two compressors? One to cool the coil, one to cool the air?
  • PolarPolar Posts: 22,492 AG
2 stage in a/c is usually 2 compressors, or one with an unloader as the 2nd stage.
  • JoshWJoshW Posts: 523 Officer
It is a demand load system for use with zoning. If I have two zones and only one is calling for cooling, the system operates at half speed to accommodate the load. The variable speed system is the same. Some of my homes have 5 or 6 zones calling on one variable speed system. The more zones in need, the harder the system works. This compared to a system that is always at full capacity. They have a longer life and a MUCH better energy efficiency. Plus they cool/control humidity really well.

You're talking about a cascade system on a environmental chamber used for testing and research. Try and have your average A/C tech work on that. Lol
