jon gruden on the first pick of the nfl draft

frankfrank Posts: 13,292 AG
“I don’t understand why [Mariota] isn’t the No. 1 player in this draft on Mel Kiper’s Big Board,” Gruden said, via Rotoworld.

Gruden disagrees with those who think Mariota is a product of Oregon’s offense and not a fit for the NFL.

“I don’t know anybody in this draft that can do for a football team what Mariota can do,” Gruden said. “He can read the field. That whole thing about Oregon being a no-huddle, dive-option team, that is just a narrative resulting from a lack of information. The Ducks run a lot of pro-style concepts. Mariota does a lot with the protections. I’ve seen him throw the ball with touch and timing in tight windows.” The former Bucs coach points out that Mariota is the same size as Jameis Winston but runs 4.52 forty. He is incredibly elusive, and man, is he a playmaker and a great competitor. I see him functioning in the pocket, out of the pocket, and if you want to run a zone-read, he’ll rip the defense apart. He is like Russell Wilson, only he is 6-4.”

In other words, Gruden thinks the Buccaneers are going to make a mistake tomorrow night when they pass on Mariota and pick Winston.

hopefully the BUCS trade down and pick up o/d linemen
but if they take the risky route of drafting a first round qb they should take mariota
winston is going to be a turnover machine in the nfl with his propensity for throwing interceptions

Maybe the GM, owner(s) and coaches have a better perspective than JG on what fits Tampa Bay's needs. At the end of the day, if they do pick JW, only time will tell on how he fares in the NFL.

I never was impressed by Gruden as a talent evaluator by his draft picks. I think he is a good coach though

I think the media outlets that these so-called "analysts" work for want them to shake things up. Gives them more clicks on their websites. More $$ from advertisement. Obviously, the Winston-Mariota controversy this year is promoting exactly what they want. So, why not have your analysts scratch up something to lure folks in?

Do you think the bucks will win more than 5 games this year?

    I'll answer that on Friday.

I ask this because Zimm has said Jameis is the best prospect since Luck. He goes onto a tangent about them both bring accepted at Stanford, yada yada yada.
Luck took a 2-11 team to a 11-5 in year one. I wonder if he thinks Jameis will continue his parallel w/ Luck and do the same for the bucks.

The voodoo curse on the Bucs will continue whether it be Jameis or Mariota.

Maybe they should change uniforms again. :rotflmao

No matter what the Gata thinks. JW, if picked :wink, will improve the Bucs. You guys need to take your orange and blue glasses off. He is one hell of a on the field leader and pushes everyone to compete. Something the Bucs have lacked for a looong time.

I can not speak for "Gata" but I 100% agree JW5 will improve the bucks. :hugeaccomplishment

I think the record will be better than last year, the Colts had a better O-line at the time, agreed? I don't think you'll see the 180 you saw with the colts, but I believe Jameis is "worth" 5-6 wins

As long as Winston helps the Bucs look anything better than pathetic (like they did last year), it will be considered a success. Then you have to start looking at what he does the following years

    Disagree.
If the colts oline was any good they would have better than 2-11. Luck came on board and turned them into a playoff team in year one.
The fan base will want instant results.

I'm strictly talking about next year. Most people recognize the multitude of holes in this Bucs team, namely the o-line and lack of consistent pass rush. That's why if Winston plays well enough to get them to 6-7 wins, it will hold the fan base over until the next year. Now if we start talking about 6-7 wins this year, 6-7 wins next year, 6-7 wins the year after that...the torches and pitchforks will come out.

I don't think Winston is going to be quite as successful as Andrew Luck. It would be nice if he was, but this where the "fan of the game" part comes into play as opposed to "fan of JW5 and noles." Winston has to play well, no doubt about it. But the Bucs roster leaves a lot to be desired, and realistically, fans should be satisfied with noticeable improvement.

At 4:30 I drove by the stadium where the Bucs are having their watch party and there were cars lined up at each entrance waiting to get in.

I'm still saying Jameis is the Bucs pick.
