Question about smoker/ former smokers?

PolarPolar Posts: 22,492 AG
This scares the **** out of me but I will ask. How long did you smoke for when you did? At what point do you think you may have done irreversible damage? I know a lot of people that have quit, then in like 5 years whammo they are riddled with problems? I think now that Im 40 I worry about every little ache and pain like a little old lady at times. Ive also known many into their 90's that still smoke. I guess its different for each person. What are the signs to look for that you could possibly have smoking related issues like, COPD, emphysema etc.

    I also have a question.

Why did you smoke your second and third cigarette?

At 1st Tobacco had a high, then it just gave a comfortable feeling. I'm 42 started smoking at about 15.

I was about 14 and I went to the store and bought a pack of Taryetons. They were the kind that my friend's mom smoked and I also thought they were cool because they had charcoal granules in the filter. So, I went down to the canal in the woods behind my house and light one up. I took a few puffs and suddenly my nose started bleeding. It was really bleeding bad! I was wearing a white T-shirt, and by the time I stumbled up the long steep hill to my house, my shirt was completely red. I mean, my nose was GUSHING! Just as I got to the driveway, my father pulled-in and saw me covered in blood. He is a doctor, and he laid me down on the steps and packed my nostril with gauze. I was scared to death - not because of the nose-bleed, but because I was sure he would smell the smoke on my breath. Apparently, he didn't. The blood stopped after a while, and I never smoked again! Not sure what happened. Perhaps the combination of fear and excitement and tobacco made my blood pressure spike?

Smoking the first one of your life in can understand, peer pressure and youth. But why did you go for a second? How many did it take until you were hooked? I can't imagine them tasting good at first.

Started smoking at 18 or 19, quit at 50. After 14 years of not smoking, no noticeable effects that I'm aware of. My father smoked until he was 50, got lung cancer at 52, had part of a lung removed and is still alive today @ 91.

oh gotcha. I must have been about 15. Both my grand parents smoked so me and a few buddies snuck out( grandparents lived next door) took a pack of Pall Malls out of my granpas car and lit them up. I didnt really get hooked at that point. Had a few here and there. I guess when I was about 17 and entered the HVAC biz full time is when I just started. Smoke breaks, beers with the guys after work etc.

I smoked to be cool in HS, never got a high or whatever it is when you smoke. Maybe I wasn't inhaling enough.

Smoke free for 1 year 7 months and 8 days. The morning hacking went away in just a matter of days. Still falling apart though!

I smoked for about 10 years. Got the flu and was hacking and coughing and decided it was time. For the first year I always had a carton of cigs under the seat of my Jeep as a comfort blanket. Threw them away at the end of the year. That was 30-years ago. I don't miss the smell or morning cough and it's nice having an empty shirt pocket.

I quit smoking after about 10 years. What caused me to quit was I smoked while I was sick coughed so hard something gave coughed up dime size blood chunks for a few months every morning. I quit smoking after a few weeks went to the doctor and the doctor told me if problem kept getting worse she would be concerned. But since I was getting better slowly not so much of a great concern. Now after about nine months of no smoking cigs I THINK I can feel the damage that was done but feel a lot better as the months go by. i have also noticed my quality of sleep has gone up and don't feel like carp when I wake up. If you want to quit smoking as much as you want to breath you will quit. Wish the best for ya and anyone else that wants to quit.

One of the sure signs of a very serious impending health issue is the compulsion

Smoked 3-4 packs a day when I quit cold turkey. quit when they hit 80 cents a pack. No health issues so far. M y mother died from empahsema (spell) and that was ten times worse than cancer. My father died from heart attack at 48 3-4 packs for Pall Malls a day along with coffee and stress. My drunken uncle is 90 and smokes and drinks everyday, go figure. I think if it's your turn, there's little you can do to avoid it but if you quit you CAN save a ton of money. Now quitting drinking is a whole new issue. I've done both, but I could down a cold Bud right now and it's been over 20 years.

COPD statistically is 3ed on the list. Heart disease is number 1, cancers of the lung, bladder and stomach would be #2 then lung issues such as COPD. I can tell you I see smokers die of heart disease at a high rate and at early ages, especially if they are also diabetic or have a family history. Of course that may be better then the alternative, COPD = slow suffocation.

There are many who have great genes and can smoke and drink and live long lives.

Then again you don't see many fat old people walking around.

    Everyone dies eventually.
