Mahi starting to push through 4/17

My buddy Rob and I decide fri was looking like a good day to make push off shore. We meet at haulover with another dude Ritchie and quickly get the show on the road. Quick stop at Lester to load the bait well and we are off. First stop 180 to drift some pilchards ... No joy . Plan was little driftin ... Little runnin and gunnin . I was more interested in getting offshore but any fish will do when you haven't heard your reels scream in a while. We were looking for the color change but it was difficult to see early am. So we settled on our 180 and just drifted for 45 min. As I mentioned no joy there so we pack it in and head off. Half a mile later and there's the color change . We all decide our baits deserve a swim on the clean side of this so in they go. 2 nice hookups in under 10 min produced two sharks. At least our drags we're screaming a bit. Pack that one in and get off shore to 600-800 ft . We had about 10knts so we didn't see any large patches. Plenty of scattered so we decide to blind troll in the scattered weeds. Personally I was thinking ...that's a lot of work dragging through scattered weeds. I love catching fish more then I hate clearing lines so here we go. Get the spread out . Quick argument over where the daisy chains and skirted Bally's belong in the spread. Then 5 min in and the right long goes off and we are hooked up . Nice little bull comes over the rail. Mid April when the winds die down you got a good shot at a decent size dolphin . Get the spread back out, 20 min later spot a frigate ... That's a good thing. Chase him and he puts us on two other smaller fins 10 min apart . Both times we left the fish in looking for a school and didn't see any ? Get moving again.. bit later picked up couple more . Called it a day at noon. Final tally 5 fins one small gaffer. Let's get this season started!

Went out PE Friday. Definitive gulfstream edge. Scattered weeds. Blind trolled 600-880 for 12 miles~ 3 hours. Nothing. No birds. One Mano heading North a mile high. Came inside and caught a 21 inch Mangi and few yellowtails.

We found some on Monday in 350ft of water. We had reports of them in 200ft and veered of course kinda by accident and once we got to 350' they were around. Slow trolling goggle eyes .

Nice catch. Saturday was tough for us... We didn't get lines in the water until about 3:30 PM because it was decided at the last minute to head out on a whim... Lot's of scattered weeds. Finally found a couple in 750'. Just a couple of decent schoolies in the 7-8 pound range on the troll for both of them. Nothing following them... Crappy day fishing, but good just being on the water!

Went one for two on dolphin. Of course the one we lost was about a 15 pounder but we came home with dinner. Scattered weeds EVERYWHERE and it was a real pain. Seems like just about everyone caught 1-4 fish but no big schools yet.

    Good job on the catch!

Saturday was tough for us too. Hit scattered weed, weed lines, debris out to 23 miles with nothing to show for it. Ran 140 miles total and saw lots of porpoise and a pilot whale in 2,300ft.

Same for us though we did not put that many miles on...went to 26 off
  • Same here, fished a lot on those weeds in 1700, but nothing to show for it. Moved into about 900 and followed a diving frigate for nearly a hour with flyers busting everywhere, but only say 12" peanuts in the water!

April is not over yet.....Heading out tomorrow 8am Haulover. We'll see what's out there (with our Costa's on of course ;)...lol

I only ask to find that window where preparation & dedication meet the right place at the right time.... is that too much :)

    Nice catch & report!

    Mine is forthcoming hopefully....

    Tight lines!

My sentiments exactly. Good luck tomorrow. I was planning to head out tomorrow, but I know it will be worse than 2-3s after seeing the wind ripping across the coast of Miami beach today. Post up on how it goes!
