Adjusting Line Lay on Stradics

I have a couple of Stradic FH's (a 1000 and 5000) that I use regularly but have a problem with braid line lay on the spools particularly with the 1000. It bunches up at the top of the spool which is no good with braid (causes lots of wind knots). I can only fill the spool about 3/4 (anymore is a waste of line - will lose it to wind knots the first trip out) which isn't a big deal on the 5000 because it holds so much line but is on the 1000. I read somewhere once that the line lay on Stradic spools can be adjusted by adding/removing washers - is anyone familiar with this and is this something I can do myself (or am I better off having Kel's in Orlando making those adjustments)?

NOTE: I already know to spool the line tight, set the drag looser, manually flip the bail, and to keep the line tighter when reeling - but with the 1000 none of that helps - the line just doesn't lay right on the spool.

Remove the spool, on the shaft the spool sits on you will see a gear looking thingy. there should be a black rubber washer on the spool side of the thingy. Now find the box your reel came in and retrieve the bag with additional rubber washers. Add washers until you get even line lay on the spool. As to wind knots, sometimes the cause can be line twist. This can be caused by the way you put new line on the spool, or your line roller is frozen and not rolling. To check the line roller, mark a line on the roller with a sharpie and pass a short piece of line through the roller, move the line back and forth and take note of the mark you made on the roller, see if it moves as you move the line.

Awesome thanks! Doubt I'll be able to find the spare washers though (I've had both reels for years). I'll also defiantly check the roller because it does make noise on the 1000.
