I fish the indian river lagoon near Titusville. Do you think top waters would work during mid day? I've had luck early in the AM but haven't really tried them later in the day. Anybody have any luck mid day with topwater for reds and trout?
I have had success with topwater throughout the day but that probably has more to do with 1. stubborness and sticking to the bait and 2. working the bait appropriately (which is a lot easier when it's your 'confidence' bait).
If you're working 2' of water, a fish can see and hear a topwater all day long. It'll work better early and late, but you can work it all day and catch fish. It's more fun, though, to broaden your horizons and catch them with different baits. I'm forcing myself off my 'confidence' baits in order to do that very thing. And as a result, I think I'm catching more fish.
I always have a Pop-R type topwater on ......trout cannot stand the commotion it makes !!
As you know the mornings are usually calm ...water is flat ...and a topwater is most effective ! As the day goes on ....wind will pick up ....water starts to chop and it will lose it effectiveness . But ...I still have it at the ready ....some of my biggest fish have come on a lone blowup ! I drop the jig rod and fire the topwater out there ! Calm water around noon ....when sun is overhead really silhouettes the bait (usually a spook ) and works well !
As I said ....always have one ready to go !! G`luck and tight lines !
my biggest trout was caught on topwater in the middle of the day in february. but i dont think it would be the most productive, but its worth throwing it out every now and then

Every job has a best tool..
Cold water periods are not the best time for that tool...
Will they work...maybe...but no better than they would during times when they are a good choice.
