Dog insurance?

MelbourneMarkMelbourneMark Posts: 3,843 Captain
Does anyone have insurance for their pets?

I am picking up a great dane puppy tonight. The parents and puppies are registered with papers etc.. Both parents are in good health and do not have any known issues. With some pure breeds, there can be some health risks that can be very costly.

We are obviously hoping that our new dog will not have any health issues, but if he does, they can be very expensive.

Has anyone had pet insurance, and had to make a claim? Did you find that it was worth it, or is it better for catastrophic type injuries?

Thanks in advance.

No. If vet wants more than $100, I get another dog.

Johnny Bandit had it, I believe. PM him.

I used Vet Smart for my dogs and their preventative plan. It wasn't insurance, but it saved me money over the long term. You paid them a flat fee and it covered the basic services, if I remember correctly. You got discounts on everything else. The only bad thing about them was the vets never stayed more than a couple of years it seemed and you have a new vet.

We have it. Our dog blew out her acl and ins paid about half of the 3000 dollar bill.

I had Trupanion pet insurance and the younger the dog is when you get it the cheaper it is. I had it for 4-5 years and never needed it for anything catastrophic. While I do recommend getting it what I found is that the increases in premiums is problematic. I ended up dropping it and funding my own Obamadog plan! It's like any other insurance and you are always rolling the healthcare dice. Good luck!

No, every dog I ever had came from the pound, insurance for a dog, really? I could see a race horse or something.

I have VPI insurance for Cody. What made you switch from VPI to Embrace?

If you really feel this way, you have no business owning a dog. Get a goldfish or hamster.

I appreciate all the helpful responses. I will look into embrace and vpi. It sounds like a decent idea for the expensive un-expected events.

With good breeding and petagree, you should be able to insure his nuts for a tidy sum...

I spent $1,200 on an Akita after it was bitten in the throat by a copperhead and about that much on another that got mangled by a bear. Both events pretty much reached the upper limit of what I would ever spend on a vet bill for a dog again.

I do for catastrophic occupancies. I don't want to have to consider money versus someone who never questioned my intentions.

I would read the policy real good. The one our employer offered was ok if the dog got hit by a car or simple accident. They did not cover things that were related to the usual stuff of the breed. Like if they are known to have hip displaysia, then it was not covered. The part that would cover cancer was a lot more, not on the standard policy. I asked the vet about the insurance and their answer was you could break almost even on wellness and meds. Not worth it unless the animal got hurt. But it still did not cover everything.

I have a friend who considers there dogs, "the kids". They spent thousands on surgeries, medicines cancer treatment, and the dog still died.

I spent 5k for cataract surgery on a English Pointer at Blue Pearl in Tampa, just stroked a check and didn't blink an eye..

    Part of owning a dog.
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.

I had a gerbil, but I lost it somewhere. Chinese friend ate my Koi.

I currently have 2 dogs that haven't been sick or injured in 6 years (knock wood). Vet friend mails me the shots every 3 years. Bottle of Ivermectin from feed store lasts 10 years. Flea pills off eBay in summer. They stay outside 24/7 except New Years and July 4th they want to go in garage.

My last died after he went out to party on highway one night. One before that died of old age, and one before that I ran him over in the yard by accident
