Fishing haulover canal tips

Gonna take the family out fishing this weekend. Haven't had much luck on either lagoons, mostly because my boat can't get skinny enough to where the fish usually are this time of year. I've had more luck on my yak. And since it's gonna be windy this weekend, I was going to try fishing Haulover Canal. Never fished it. So was just wondering if you guys had any tips. From what I can tell looks like cut mullet and live shrimp fished on the bottom seems to be the best bet. Do you rig with a egg sinker? One oz? Or a jig head? What is the bottom like? Is it mainly grass or are there rocks? Do you anchor? Any tips would be appreciated!

I like to anchor and use 20lb outfits(Big fish in Haulover) with fish finder rigs. Which ever size egg sinker to hold bottom and a swivel to leader and a circle hook. I use what ever I cast net in the area pins, pigs, croakers, mullet, ladyfish I have caught big reds on all plus tarpon, snook I even lost boatside what I thought looked like a really nice Gag one night. Good Luck

Thanks for the tips Dave. Went out yesterday in my yak yesterday and the wind was pretty bad. Suppose to be worse today. So the family went to church instead.

are you looking to catch something specific?

    blck drum

    overslot reds

    tarpon

    grouper

    snapper

they all require some different techniques. make sure you look up the haulover canal USGS data. you can google the website, it has salinity, water temp, water height, and tidal flow... pay attention to the tidal flow. it changes the fishery a bit.
