As in anything...knowing what service and what career path is available is ultimately crucial...
Sending your daughter off to be a " war fighter " was not what was suggested... and it would seem your wife has little understanding of what the military really is. The military has almost every other vocation that is in the real world. If your daughter was musicly inclined...she could well play in the Band...and not be in any more danger than if she were playing Carnegie hall.
Ultimately, You and your wife should be "guides"...and expose your daughter to as many options as possible...and let her make the informed decision that you would hope an ADULT would make.
There are many roads to travel
Many things to do.
Knots to be unraveled
'fore the darkness falls on you
I did 10 years in the military and look at me: most cool headed and easy going cat on this forum. Nothing can be as bad as the sandbo, it's all gravy at this point
Proud supporter of the anti fishing, terroristic (lol what?) movement known as Greenpeace.
My son was pushed to start at FSU by his mother, who had her masters in guidance and counseling.

Big mistake. He was not ready and played and fooled around until dropping out.
What next?
He came home and asked me for a job.
I gave him every low-level dirty chitty job with the promise that that was all he was capable of earning, . . . and should be cut no slack from my master craftsmen just because he was my son. Am sure they delighted in that and in ways I fortunately never heard details.
Within less than a year he finally figured it out and eventually graduated with a 3.8 and consistently on the Dean's list at FAU.
He is now a very successful international wealth manager.
Bottom line, IMHO, is that most kids have to figure it out on their own and move on up from there.
