Must report firearms to ATF upon arrival?

footanklegfootankleg Posts: 513 Officer
I recently applied for and received a new LBO since I had gotten a new passport. The text below is copied from the confirmation email I received from CBP. Anyone hear of this or have more info?

"There are certain entry requirements of which boaters should be particularly aware. One is the requirement to obtain approval from ATF - in advance - for the entry of all firearms onboard the vessel. If you do not have the approved ATF Form 6 for firearms, CBP will detain them."

Reading up on it form 6 is for importers of firearms , appears to be for resale? An online process is listed then in another page it says do not use that process with no further information?

That form is only for people who buy firearms overseas and wish to bring them back to the U.S. Since you can't buy firearms in the Bahamas it's a moot point anyway. If they ask for paperwork on your return show them the Bahamas entry paperwork on which you declared your firearms, which proves that you had them before checking in to the Bahamas. Firearms are a PIA in the Bahamas and not likely to be of any use to you since they have to remain locked up for the duration of your trip. I would only consider taking guns if heading down to Cay Sal where there are no resident police or military. BTW, the Bahamas, like all other UK colonies, is not sympathetic to using deadly force to protect yourself; it'll cost you a bundle in legal fees and you'll probably still spend a long time behind bars.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad there is a reasonable explanation. I've been packing since the old days at Bimini. I always declare on entry and keep firearms locked in the cabin while on land.
