Haven't posted for a while.. My truck blew up and I am currently waiting on a good deal to pop up. Been sitting at home going **** CRAZY not being able to fish.. Limited to fishing the ditches for baby poons which has been going pretty well considering it's January, but it's just not the same thing as targeting monster reds on a shallow flat. My buddy Neil offered to scoop me and my yak up yesterday to go hunt for some pigs. And pigs we found..
Went to probably my favorite sandbar in the world and it did not disappoint. At first it was blowing 100, and sight fishing was a chore, but the wind died out for about a half hour, and they came out of the woodwork. Backs and tails of Reds from 40-50"+ started breaking the surface everywhere in 2-3 feet of water. We tried to get them to eat our plastics but they just were not having it. Being as i'm stuck indoors, I wanted a **** fish no matter how it came so we busted out the ol reliable mullet chunks (hey it's still sight fishing even if it is with bait lol.. I promise you, it is still exciting to see a monster tail on a well placed chunk).
Turns out they did indeed want to be fed. Neil popped a 35" right off the bat, then I answered back with a fat bull. We actually had a sweet double hookup at this point but his pulled the hook. After a quick photo op with my fish, Neil was hooked up again within two minutes and after a half hour fight put his redzilla in the yak. The girth on his fish was unreal, it was 35lbs+ and HEALTHY. Felt good to be back in my natural habitat! Had to wait a while for my first red of the year but it wasn't a bad one at all..
