First Redfish...

For my duck hunting buddy from Michigan.
It starts with him looking at a replica mount that is on my wall and he says " I'd like to catch one of those"
With us having a grueling duck hunt schedule we finally had an off day on Monday while one buddy drove another to the airport...and we slept in. We woke at 9 and the weather looked OK...so we splashed the skiff. Wind was brutal at 14 out of the NE...but it didn't take too long...

Next fish was a real nice 31 incher....

20150119_124404_zpspkc1rqfh.jpg

He caught one more before it was time to head in.

Today after duck hunting I got him his first Tarpon and several Snook...photos are on other buddies phone...If i figure out how to move them I'll put them up..

Now...back to duck killing.

Yeah, these guys are hard core fisherman up north so getting additional species added to the life list made him very happy....and these guys are so into it...so much that we went and caught a boatload of blues today on light tackle after going duck hunting this morning.

Duck, how has the duck season been this year? Would love to see some picks of your hunts. Have not been able to hunt the past 3 seasons.

Actually, For a guy who started the season off with a broken arm....I've been doing very well.
It has been a good many years since I cared about "body count" and too many seasons of + 200 ducks has a lot to do with that. Now, I hold myself to less than 100 ducks per year as a self imposed restriction.

I don't do a lot of picture taking...most times I leave the phone in the truck or in a dry bag in the duck boat since I can't afford to ruin my new phone...
and I usually kill one phone every duck season...so I'm a little skittery with this new expensive one....:wink

This was from the other day...pretty cool birds.

This was a Bahamian ( white cheeked ) Pintail I shot back on 12/13

And this is a picture of my son towing his poor old dad into the hunt spot since a guy with a broken arm is not much for push-poling....:grin

Duckman, what are you typically using for bait around Sebastian? I've just started fishing the area, exploring different areas from the inlet to wabasso bridge using different jigs. Haven't had much luck, thinking of trying some live bait.

    You shoulda been here yesterday.
  • duckmanJRduckmanJR Posts: 21,265 AG
It is winter...use large live shrimp if you are sight fishing.
In spring / summer / fall...use "wigglers" :wink ( Small finger mullet)

But really, I use a 1/8th oz Strike king jig head with a DOA CAL a majority of the time.
If you are not having "luck"...it is because there are no fish where you are fishing.

like the one of you son towing you to the spot

Thank you Monty. It really was pretty easy since Jessi has good casting skills and was able to make good presentations.

As far as the towing..it was the return trip since the inbound is in the dark.
And the splint...maybe it was a good omen....

    Look at this....

This is a Blue wing teal / Cinnamon teal hybrid (cross).... Cinnamon teal are not found in the Atlantic flyway being a western bird... so, a hybrid is a rare bird...maybe just as rare or maybe more than the Bahamian Pintail I shot earlier this season.

No I didn`t for get about them ,or the slam. It look like I will be coming down again . That would nice to go bassin. I will keep in touch. We got hit by a bad snow storm today about 2 feet of it. My area got hit the worse of course. It took me 5 hours to clean up this mess. I got to get of here , these winter`s are so long . Seams like years since I sat in my yard. I know Florida hot in the summer ,but this is nuts living here. I have a few pics of my boat and yard for you so you can remember what a snow storm looks like, and it`s 20 degrees out there. It not fit for humans How do you send pics

Thanks...the second fish was 31 inches...I almost messed up on it...hooked it right against the 'groves and started to move away from the danger....but it came off the shoreline easily and I was fooled...and slacked off on the troller.....then it ran again and I had to get on the troller again....and it made it VERY close to the edge before we got it turned.

He did it all himself...I just called the shot. It takes a little practice to spot them.

yes, I guess it`s chilly for you Floridians. In April I will see 60. About the time I get home from Sebastian. Looking forward too coming down. I brought an inflatable kayak for the trip , I had one before that I used for sweet water bassin, It was real good to use very comfortable. Are there alligator`s in the fresh water there . That could be creepy being in a inflatable. Look forward to getting back on the IRL see you soon.
  • duckmanJRduckmanJR Posts: 21,265 AG
Yes, freshwater has gators...but they rarely eat old Yankees....too bitter :grin

You should have said something....I'd lend you a yak or a canoe for your trip.....
