San Sal (Riding Rock Marina)

tango34tango34 Posts: 106 Officer
I would post this over in the Tropical Forum but it seems very quiet over there.

Looking for anyone who has spent any time in San Sal and there thoughts on the surge at the marina. I have heard it is bad but curious if others feel the same way and during which winds is it worse.

Also if anyone has any recommendations on accommodations near the marina that would be great.

Looking to spend some time there this next summer (June), for a few weeks.

I popped in there for a day. 3/4 of of a time surge is not a issue, I do not recall what wind is, I believe a ne.but check for yourself.

yes it can get bad with any kind of sustained wind from the west. I recommenced the biggest fenders you can carry and extra lines twice as big as you think you might need, this being said it is well worth the trip. feel free to drop me a IM as i do not stop by this section as much as i used to

extra fender for under dock lines to cut down on chafing

we never suffered any damage there but i did have a few night with more action than was fun.

Wow Dragon Bait that is great info and I'm going to read over your reports in the next few minutes.

We are contacting the Sands/San Sal hotel that has the 2/2 rooms right by the Marina on Tuesday to look into reserving a place from the last week of May thru early July.

We will be on the Ryco in my signature, "Tango".

I'm also going to send you a few questions via IM.

I'm hoping to be there around june/july with our boss. No problems bringing you supplies from Nassau if you have them sent to our boat.

What Dragon Bait said is spot on. Extra lines and polyform fenders

Thanks Mike. Really looking forward to the trip now and am taking notes on what to bring. What size fenders are you using in the photo captain Ray, for the chaffing protection by the cleat?

not sure what size Roy was using, but the ones I was using were about 10 inches but you could also use any kind of chafing gear. I saw others use wood stacked up and what appeared to be pieces of fire hose slid over their lines
    Ray ;)

just thought I would add if you need to buy extra dock lines 3 strand twisted nylon has a bit of stretch to it for a shock absorber effect

You could also use small lengths of chain and a shackle and not worry about chafe gear.

Thanks everyone, I like the shackle idea. Have seen that around some of the docks here in west palm.

Put a phone call in today to Sands and left a message, going to try them again tomorrow.

Any help for getting in contact with San Sal resort and spa. Have tried the phone numbers on their website numerous times and emailed them as well, over the past week and haven't heard anything back.

I know it's the bahamas but, an other numbers to try?

also for those with direct tv on your boat your dish will not pick up a signal bring about a 100 ft of cable with ends and barrel connectors to hook to the 10ft dish they have on site, make sure you let them know you need to be near dish. You will also need to hook cable up to receiver so plan ahead, I ran a cable through the boat so i could hook it up inside rod locker in the pit so i did not have to leave the salon door open
also be prepared for the mosquito swarm near sundown, I recommended getting those nets for over your head and plenty of bug juice

Just wanted to give everyone an update for those following...

Have gone back and forth with Hilton about the rooms and possibly a car/golf cart for our stay. He has been very helpful and once we get our dates down we will be good to go. Right now looking at the month of June...

Also have been in contact with Michelle at Riding Rock. Also very helpful and again once we settle on dates we will reserve the slip. Anyone looking at riding Rock be aware of the $15 per day water charge and $30 per day electric charge. Working on getting those metered possibly as obviously everyday we will not be using the water and not staying on the boat the power should be less, but it is what it is.

Also open to ideas on where to go after San Sal. Right now looking at Cat then the Exumas/Harbour Island/Abacos or Cape Eleuthera/Harbour Island/Abacos. It's a very expensive trip so the Exumas might have to wait till another year.
