Randy Shannon heading to the Gators...

Larry MacLarry Mac Posts: 5,466 Admiral
according to Fox Sports on TV and radio in Jacksonville. He'll be going as LB coach and Recruiting Coordinator. I saw this coming not long after McElwain was hired a few weeks ago but knew no announcements could be made until after the Hogs finished their season last night. Great timing for the Gators to have Shannon recruiting SFla especially with near mutiny going on at the U.

That seems like a surprise that he would come as a position coach. I didn't follow his career much before he was the HC at UM. Can he coach defense?

This will help FSU more than you'll ever know.

    I actually agree.

Shannon isn't very well liked at a lot of the High schools down there after the Miami NW debacle. It'll help UM a lot too, believe it or not.

Glad the Noles feel he's not a threat. Meanwhile he recruited some great players from Miami to Arkansas of all places.
It'll be much easier for him to recruit for UF especially with the U in the tank now and uncertainty about its future.

That's what he does. Former DC...

I'm not so sure he will be good in SoFla though.

I can only think of one kid, Alex Collins.

His father was from the state of Arkansas and wanted to play for them.

By landing Collins, he landed Denver Kirkland who was a package deal with him.

All the other kids he brough from Miami were kids who weren't even offered by FSU, UF and UM.

    Spot on!

He blew any credibility he had down there as a player and assistant coach while he was the HC. I'd love to hear how his recruiting pitch has changed since he was in our office recruiting a fullback we had a few years back.

Once any coach puts on that Gators apparel, he's instantly a better recruiter. He's now carrying a bigger stick. One backed up by tradition and nearly everything else you could want as selling points for arguably as good of a job as there is in America.
Randy Shannon, with his tremendous ties to south Florida, was helping Arkansas lure some of it's top recruits the last two years out of the nation's No. 1 talent bin in Broward and Dade.
His success rate figures to only increase as a Gator.
Right now Florida needs a major dose of explosive talent in terms of perimeter skill. In 2016 alone, there's almost a dozen four-star caliber wide receivers in Dade & Broward combined. Look for the Gators, led by Shannon, to chomp into some of that.
Shannon is highly respected by the high school coaches and people around the talent in his native Miami.
He's also a very good developer of talent at the linebacker position. He will closely help new DC Geoff Collins with the game-planning as well. Shannon was a super DC at Miami and helped down the stretch for Arkansas this year, too.
Shannon will also provide an organized plan as the RC for the Gators which will wisely emphasize using the majorly of their resources and time recruiting the best of Florida talent, as it should be, complimented by nationally recruiting as well.
Very, very good hire for Florida.
I'm excited just for him to be our LB coach.
Our defense is already good, but our LB's are probably the weakest part. He should really help tweak that part of our defense

    Right?

He was telling all these coaches from SoFla High schools not to go to UF, FSU and to head to UM. Now he'll be doing the opposite? James Coley had issues his first year when he flipped from FSU to UM and kept recruiting the same area.

Luckily, shannon took a small break and headed to Arky though.

He'll be a solid LB coach, I'm not worried about him as an "ace" recruiter. Losing Trobb is a bigger hit in recrutiing, right Larry?

And I didn't see a SINGLE top blue chip recruit named in the Bio. He said he helped lure kids from SoFla, and I only know of one. See my post above...

I don't like him as part of the new coaching staff personally, but if he had just 1 percent of the mojo that is now going on in razor world....im all for giving him a solid chance.....the razors right now are playing top end ball...if that gel that is going on now still is there co me next year, only time will tell....
For the love of all outdoors recreational activities....what my spelling is off, that will learn ya. Pimping ain't easy unless u went to FSU, its a BS course.
What do u get when you can connect the dots, color inside the lines, and get your release papers.....sentence served, times up at Felon sentenced university.
    Floridas first woman's college.
The only difference between FSU and all the other colleges are other colleges accept you into the university's. At FSU you are taken into custody.

Don't get all giddy about Shannon being your key to South Florida recruiting. Shannon burned a lot of bridges down here recruiting. He angered a lot of high school coaches and only wanted to recruit kids from certain high schools. Now if you would have pulled Ice Harris from here ( Treon Harris' dad). then you're in good shape. Not only do all the high school coaches know him, they all respect him. Hopefully he doesn't get frustrated like Michael Barrow did and leave before we ax Golden.

He was alright as a coordinator. Some of his iweaknesses were masked by the fact that he had total studs on defense like Vince Wilfork, Sean Taylor, D.J. Williams, Vilma etc. Our 2001 defense wasn't even top 10 ranked in rush defense. We gave up something like 120 yards per game I believe, which is atypical of championship defenses. We were helped by being no.1 against the pass. A very opportunistic defense with a lot of interceptions and a quick strike offense.

I'm not worried Zim. Shannon will be a great addition both in his experience in coaching and in recruiting. Like Shakespeare, "he doth protest too much." That's the Noles now jumping in claiming how bad he is going to be, when you know he'll be fine. In retrospect, who did TRob recruit down there beside JC Jackson. He met a lot of recruits, but how many did he close on. He did such a great job on Dalvin and Ermon.
I'm sure Coach Mac will pair Shannon up with other coaches to get into SFl homes to develop connections for the future because he realizes Shannon won't be there forever. But in reality UF has had minimal impact in SFl. Anything Shannon can do will be icing on the cake and that is Coach Mac's plan

Below is a tweet from ESPN regarding one of the top LB's ( Jeff Holland)in the country.

@DerekTysonESPN: Jeff Holland on Randy Shannon: "Oh that's my boy. We got a great relationship. That helps Florida out a lot with me." #Gators

Dude, you have the 90th ranked class. You HAVE to do Something.

Trust me, I'm not saying Shannon won't be a good LB coach, it's just the way everyone is touting his rapport down here is a JOKE. Even diehard and very passionate UM guys (Ssoto) are chiming it, it's not just Noles.

Shannon will not out recruit FSU in SoFla.

Shannon going to coach LB's at UF is better than Chris Leak, who went to UF, coaching WR's at UF.. Relax everybody. It's just a LB coach.

He'll be a great LB coach.

I've only been arguing him being tabbed as an ace recruiter.

Jacory harris was his "ace in the hole" that year too.

He won't recruit SoFla as well as some fans think he will.

LArry, considering you don't have a single recruit right now from the tri county area....anything is an improvement from ZERO.

Zim-- this year is a wash. We hardly have a recruit from anywhere much less SFl. We might get lucky and get a few decent players. 2016 is the year to watch.

Yup. We're stoked as we have the #1 dual threat QB, #2 and #3 DE's and #1 safety so far.

Then again, Feb 2016 is a LONG WAY AWAY.

Y'all will have depth issues next year with this small class, good news is you can bring in 40+ kids in 2016 and pocket all those scholies.

Good hire, as long as he's not involved in any clock management aspects.

I think he has solid credentials in college and the NFL as a linebacker and linebacker coach. That should help him pull some good recruits, and I doubt any of the bitterness towards him will be lingering, on top of that, he can offer something that FSU cant, immediate playing time.

    I like!
