Art, you and I have been through this many times before and I don't really feel like having the same conversations again and again with you about the IFQ system. In your PM to me you said that you didn't like the system and if you were King you would not have done it, furthermore by not owning a permit or even being involved with the commercial (IFQ) fishery I really can't understand why a guy would literally post every day on this and other forums sticking up for this system unless he is either some sort of "plant" or has some stocks in the market. Either way it's America and I guess you are welcome to your opinion.
Mine is, IFQ is all garbage and so are the money grubbing people that are ruining fisheries all over the world.
SHARELORDS DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GROUPER AND AN AMBERJACK, BUT THEY OWN A HUGE PERCENTAGE OF THE TAC. WHAT A JOKE
As a director for Organized Fishermen of Fl. I stick up for the fishermen even if I don't agree with the management plan they have to work with.
No plant and no stocks in that market, what I told you in the pm still holds true and I don't give a rats **** if you believe me or not, you're the one that started the personal attacks.
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.

Pretty darn hard to refute that one! Thanks for posting Surfman. Some folks on here seem to have mastered the use of smoke and mirrors.
Lot of difference between 2011 and 2014, lots of other masterful techniques on here too.
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.
Very crowded this year. Lots of part timers. Our license system needs reform.
Florida License system needs to be completely overhauled, as well as the rules on bag limit sales in state waters. It is only going to get worse because of our governors policy of qualifying any honorable discharged service member for RS endorsement.
Just for your information, the old mesh sizes on the gill nets were regulated to ensure a female had roughly spawned at least twice before growing large enough to be gilled.
These restrictions were tailored to each specific region to reflect to average size of mullet throughout that region.
BTW, that's what you sporties do when high-grading grouper/snapper, cull the smaller males in favor of the larger breeders...
I know, I know, y'all ain't gonna spend fiddy gazillion dollas to catch two small snappas when youse can brang home two big sows.
Tell me, how many small fish do y'all cull/kill to keep two 15 lbers?
3.5 inch mesh or bigger in my area, 4 inch or better in the south. Most of us fished a 4 or 4.25 inch mesh during roe season specifically for red roe fish.
Your area was a little different and you can thank Dempsey Barron for that.
We may have helped slit our throats but people like you did and still continue to stab us in the back.
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.
While its a common justification of gill net proponents, the mesh size claim isnt entirely true. Theres big male mullet too, especially just before spawning so we may want to refrain from the notion that bigger mesh only catches roe mullet. Simply not true, but a popular myth to be sure. Gill nets catch whites too, likely a lower percentage, but they're all dead.
Another thing to consider is what if the exploding fleet of new cast net boats we have today (often 100 or more on a school) were each allowed a quarter mile of gill net in the water like they used to be? There wouldnt be a single living creature on the flats near the inlets from Cedar key to Marco Island. The bottom line is that while I agree it was a raw deal for the veteran commercial fishermen who used gill nets for years in Old Florida, our inshore waters can no longer support or sustain the use of that kind of gear. Its a shame but its a modern reality.
Its the same story everywhere; way more people trying earn a living from a finite resource. Its playing out all over the state.

No myth sir. 4" mesh in Citrus county broke down to aprox 75% red/ 25%white.
There were more markets back then and they could absorb the white roe catch.
Another thing to consider is that there were places that an average gill net couldn't be fished whether it be by law, current, obstructions, or depth.

What is really sad about this is, Florida fishermen also have to compete against out of state gill netted fish too.We fishermen aren't allow to gill net river fish, but fish markets buy out of state ones.:wink I guess nobody wants to speak up about that one.The Florida fishermen get to hook and line only, but the markets get flooded by gill netted fish.I just love being screw by the fish markets and all those fine people who help put the net ban in place. They also are helping put us out of business by purchasing out of state gill netted fish.Come get your "Fresh Gill Netted Fish From Florida",oh wait a minute they were caught else where.Just one question if you are selling gill netted,Why can't we gill net them?:mad

You should work towards getting legislation enacted to that effect.

And the cast netters could let the white roes go too. That is, if they weren't too greedy to sort them while they are still alive.
Most do.

The voters were promised that limiting the use of gill and entanglement nets would prevent the unnecessary killing and waste of Floridas marine resources. Someone has some explaining to do!

Hello???
I have read through this entire thread - I see you making assertions that may or may not be true, and consistently stirring the pot.
I would keep to the fisheries issues and keep the personal comments to yourself - you are your own worst enemy here.

The last thing we need is more laws. It's hard enough to try and make a living Net fishing for mullet.I have went broke trying to hook and line river fish.Drum,Sheepshead, whiting and so on.They just don't pay a good price for them anymore at the fish markets. Most fishermen now only mullet fish. This all goes back to markets buying fish from out of state gill netters.Nothing wrong with gill netting fish, but not allowing Florida fishermen to gill net too is just wrong.Don't sell fish here that we can't harvest the same way.:mad
I am,just wanted to put the word out.:USA
And the cast netters could let the white roes go too. That is, if they weren't too greedy to sort them while they are still alive.
