Cleaning and Refinishing An Old Rod...

I have what's gotta be one of the first Falcon rods that were made given to me by my FIL. It's been broken and retipped and the only significant value is that I love to fish with it. The rod has gotten a little dingy. It's faded, "varnish" is peeling and it's a little rusty around the eyes but they are still good. What's the best way to clean it up? TIA...

It will be very nice looking redone. If you want to do it. to take off the old finish scrape very carefully in one direction. This keeps it from snagging on any truly expose glass. then clean with alcohol and use a polyurethane like MinWax and do several layers. To clean the cork take a 60 percent mixture of alcohol and 40% dawn and then use it with a toothbrush. Will do a great job of cleaning the cork. The reel seat use pledge..
