We just got back from our cruise which took us to Grand Cayman, Isla Roatan, Honduras, Belize City and Cozumel.
When we got to port we walked the main street. Everyone wanted to direct us to a $500 guided fishing excursion; I couldn't spend that amount of cash so had to do the DIY thing. One of the locals directed us to a beach area just up the road by where the local fisherman clean some fish and discard the carcasses in the water. We walked up the street and found the place. Adjacent to the beach area they rented kayaks. My wife and i rented a 2 person kayak. We put in the water and paddled the area. The tarpon we all over the place. At first I was no action. I changed the flies until I got some strikes on a yellow and white synthetic streamer; I had a bunch of strikes, lost a fly during one strike but unfortunately not a solid hookup before I had to get back to the ship. Here are some pictures of the area and tarpon. My wife took some awesome underwater pics of the tarpon. We had a great time and Grand Cayman is a great place to visit.
That looks like a very nice day on the water! We also visited Grand Cayman a few weeks ago via Carnival Destiny ship. Setup a charter for half day wahoo fishing and thankfully hooked up with a nice wahoo.
I live here in Grand Cayman and flyfish almost every weekend. Should you make another trip the island, let me know. I can show you a few areas and possibly get you hooked up on some bonefish as well. I mainly flyfish for bonefish but target the tarpon, jacks and permit when the opportunity arises...

I was told that the bonefishing was better on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Is this not true? Also, what about the fishing pressure on Grand? Are there lots of fishermen? It's not, after all, a huge area. I'm also interested (natchurlly) in permit. What sizes do you have there? Are they all like the Mexican dinnerplates, or do you have some larger fish too?
I've never fished on Cayman Brac but I have in Little Cayman. The bonefishing is indeed good on Little Cayman. I need to take another trip their soon or maybe by March or April of next year. I fly fish for bones almost every weekend and there's very little fishing pressure. Rarely do I ever see another person with a fly rod or anyone fishing for bones. I've seen plenty of permit but have never made the hook-up on one. I'm usually targeting bones when I see them. I've casted at them but couldn't get them to bite. I have some learning to do on the permit! I see permit usually during the spring time. I haven't seen any in the past 3 or 4 months while out fishing. You will have the opportunity to cast at the bones and tarpons definitely!
