Wal Mart defeated on the field of battle....

duckmanJRduckmanJR Posts: 21,265 AG
So, after trying to kill off the little guy...well, not so little..Publix ,Winn-Dixie, et al... they failed.
As of 10 / 6 Wal mart is discontinuing it's matching BOGO deals against its competition.
While the evil empire is not dead...it did learn that they are not as big or great as they had thought.

You really have no idea as to reason behind their decision. I suggest Walmart knows their customers as good as or better than any retailer out there.
Not sure why they would be "the evil empire"? The serve an important segment of the market with good selection and everyday low pricing. No denying rural and lower income America has benefited from getting more for their dollar.
I personally see Publix as price gouging and over priced. There is no reason why certain staples cost 30 - 40% more at Publix.

I agree with your publix statement. I go to local produce stand, local butcher, and get staples at wd. Wd might not be much better, though

It's been moved to an online service. Instead of BOGO it's a price match to publix. You sign up and then enter your receipt on their site. Say Publix price was $5 for an item and it's BOGO. W-M's item is $4, so you pay $8 for two, instead of $5 and W-M gives you a $3 W-M card. The problem is you have to pay for 2 up front and you have to spend the refund @ W-M. Might as well shop @ Publix.

what surprises me is that most stuff at winn dixie costs more than publix and the service and cleanliness is no way comparable, why folks shop there confounds me

That has been my take as well. I think it costs less to shop at Publix overall compared to W-D and the store is much cleaner/nicer. The nastiest WD I ever saw was the one closest to the corporate headquarters. To me, that spoke volumes.

That said, I know many who have corporate jobs at W-D and want to see then succed. I just don't really see how they attract shoppers in many markets.

Walmart gives the best opportunity for bizarro creeper pics than any place in the world. Just google "the people of Walmart" images and judge for yourselves. I go there for select things like Diet Coke when they are not on sale elsewhere, and never disappointed with the idiot show. :grin

When someone bills in a product on BOGO to Winn Dixie or Publix they are billing it in at reduced price. When Walmart price matches a BOGO they are losing money big time. I know because I am in food service and deliver to Walmart locally. It is one thing to price match a sale item and maybe lose a few cents, but quite another to lose almost half the price of another product when they price match a BOGO.

I've been shopping at Winn Dixie for the last couple months. I was drawn in my the fuel perks. Saving anywhere from $0.50-$0.75 a week per gallon. I think I'm just about done with that though. Their prices are not that low and I'm pretty sure the fuel savings are not worth it. Does feel good seeing $2.50/gallon at the pump, but it's just a smokescreen for higher prices.

I'm surprised W-D is still in business....all our shopping is done at Publix. Here's a few reasons why.... Never a line at checkout ...ever! Walmart will have 100 registers with 2 or three open. Always so clean in Publix all the time. Walmart= filth publix amazing customer serice Walmart = Can't find anyone to help or even give a ****. While were on the subject of dirty places though how about Kmart as of the last 7 years just about as scummy as your local Rose's or Big Lots IMO

If you are not on a fixed income or live paycheck to paycheck and shop at Walmart, you are part of what's wrong with our country. Do the country a favor and spend 30 cents more and buy local cheap arses...

I found that the produce is better/fresher and the prices are less than or equal to publix at our local farmer's market. Get fresh eggs for free fom my FIL. I kill my own fish, so I'm good there. Only things I buy at publix are milk, cheese, and small amounts of junk food.

Maybe people shop there to save money for retirement or to take a vacation or for their children's college fund. What is wrong with that? :shrug

It doesn't mean they are cheap.

I'd like to know what exactly is the difference between publix chicken breasts and chicken breast at Wal-Mart. You can get six boneless chicken breasts for about $10 @ Wallyworld and the same amount is nearly $20 @ Publix. I've tried both and can't tell a difference in taste.

I am quite aware that they were "loss-leadering" me with their BOGO deal...and knew it could not go on forever...but I was willing to milk the cow if the milk was free!

Winn-Dixie store in my neighborhood is in the middle of a big remodel...It was built 20 years ago and their maintenance was for $hiz and it looked like a rat hole... They knew they were losing the average white female shopper to publix due to cleanliness...so are trying to up their game...but it may be too late.
