Why not? Should cut down on the all the internet speculation on "bad" shootings.

Yes they should. If I was a cop I wouldn't go one duty without one. If I have an interaction with a donut munching coffee swiller I would want him to have one. It's good for everybody.

They use them now in prisons for the guards in some countries but it is still experimental. Seems like a good idea.

    Yes.

It will help investigators piece together what happened if there is ever a question.

Only if they don't interfere in any way with their duties.

In your opinion, are there any negatives to wearing one?

    Absolutely.
Though in most cases I believe cops are honest,
for years when it came down to cop vs. civilian, cops
word usually held more weight. Because if the other guy
was innocent, he wouldn't have been arrested, right?
If you are given the power to arrest/harm/kill people, you
should be held to the highest standards and monitoring.

I personally like the idea of body cams. I've found over the years that in car cameras have truly helped, especially with complaints. More so than not, officers have been exhonerated of false alligations due to in car cams and it truly raises the bar for the level of professionalism.

However, where the in car camera stays in the car, the body cam accompanies the officer anywhere they go, whether it be the back alley, the front yard or even inside ones home. Wherever the officer goes, so does the camera.

As it stands, anything that is captured by a body cam is "Public record" and anyone can make a request for it. Since many of our interactions with people are at their worst moments of their lives, I'm concerned some may wish to exploit these videos for entertainment purposes or depending on who the person is, ie,. Celebrities etc,. The other aspect is, "Big Brother"... People complain about street corner cameras, LPR's, etc,. A body camera will have more access to peoples lives than all those other devices combined so I'm sure privacy issues will be of debate.

As it stands right now, most agencies who deploy body cams require their officers to turn them on when either dispatched to a call or if while on patrol an incident may dictate the need, ie,. to roll up on something in progress.

I can see it, if it becomes the norm, actually being a detriment
to the LE agency if they don't have it on. Like if they suddenly
roll up on something in progress and don't have time. Jury might
take it as lack of evidence from the get-go - or an indication that
they're hiding something, even when they aren't. But that's ok.
I think it would benefit LEO far more than the small % of innocent
public that might otherwise be harmed.

I'm with you!! However, it won't be a jury, it'll be the SAO sending you the "Nolle Prossed" letter with "Lack of evidence" as their determination.

All officers should be required to wear one. I've been saying this for a while.

    Why not?

I think it is a great idea....but I can see "issues" with people feeling it is too invasive.

probably will reduce a lot of resisting arrest charges that's if the tapes don't get lost

Of course ... people behave better when they know they are not acting anonymously or out of sight

It would be of benefit to both the officers and the accused ...

    DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -
Two former Daytona Beach police officers are out of a job after a controversial and violent arrest.

An internal affairs investigation revealed former officer Justin Ranum turned off his body camera during an incident under the Seabreeze Bridge.

They need to charge the cop who turned his camera off with obstruction.

I was not aware that all body cam evidence was available to the public. That is an issue, easily addressed though by tweeking the public access laws.

Na. Don't need to. You learned your lesson.
  • Will LEO's now think twice before doing something questionable? Sometimes that split second will cost a life, not necessarily the criminals..

I would be happy if the cops just thought. Or could think. And could maybe run at least 100 yards without keeling over.

Are you as tax payers willing to pay for body cams, knowing BTW, that they will need to be fixed or replaced on a very regular basis?

Yes, because of incidences like this, which had there not been a body camera, could cost the taxpayers much, much more.
