Fished from the beach this morning somewhere between Patrick and South MB and had a killer trip.
Lots of bait, mostly small mullet but was able to cast net a few hog legs. There was also lots of Atlantic Bumpers on the glass minnow schools.
There was "resident" mullet schools that stayed right in the same part of the beach from sunrise until I left around noon.
Caught several smaller snook at first light before I got crowded in on both sides by some idiots with their 5 pole set ups using dead shrimp on your average joe surf fishing rig with the huge pyramid weights. However, the rest of the fish weren't bothered.
Around 9am in addition to the mullet that were staying in the area more mullet pods started moving down the beach anywhere from the size of a car to the size of a football field constantly getting pushed through and busted as they moved. It took a little bit of effort to get my bait out to the pods moving through (surf was a little rough) but I caught several good size Jacks, a 30" red, numerous lady fish/blue fish and jumped 2 tarpon.
Around 11 all hell broke loose a couple hundred yards off shore. For over 30 minutes the water was erupting as tarpon and who knows what else wrecked havoc on the bait. It almost looked like there were schools of Bonito out there too but I can't say for sure.
Anyways, pretty cool morning and some really unexpected results considering I hardly ever fish from the beach.
I would have loved to catch a big snook or two as that was my main goal but maybe that will happen around day! If there's any beach snook experts who are interested in heading out together one morning and getting after it shoot me a PM.
