Last friday we filled our live well with 8-10 inch mullet with a single cast. They were clumped up near on the north side where the navy ship is docked.
I surfed all weekend and the bait is showing up. Its not anywhere near full mullet run force but I did see schools of finger mullet, pogies, and even a school of chunky pelchirds I woulda liked to give a personal little tour of our Volusia arti. reef program. I saw enough life this weekend Im gonna try to fish it this week.
I fished crane creek last night... swear I keep telling myself that Ill never fish that place again and I keep going back because its close and Im lazy. Didnt catch anything, but saw about 1000+ school of mullet and I NEVER see mullet in those kinds of numbers in there. Not sure if thats part of the "mullet run" or not but they were certainly schooled up in a big number.
The run has begun and we'll see increasing numbers for a couple 3 weeks and then a decreasing number after that, ending around the last of October. It's only going to get better for right now.
I was out at Playalinda Sunday morning and the place was loaded with bait. Birds and fish working bait schools as far as I could see. The bait was pilchards and not mullet though. Did get some oversized lady fish and a couple spanish macks chasing down the active schools.
Fished lot 2 at playalinda sat morning for a couple hours. Caught 2 large ladies and 2 decent blues...
No.macks in sight... also.saw some predators on the shoreline tailing... tarpon were going airborne at
a distance. Guys next to me landed 2 decent sharks. The shoreline is heating up. Good luck.
Went to lot 8 today and got a mixed bag-whiting, blues, ladies, even a lookdown. Had some good bites with finger mullet only to come back with the tail. Lots of bait moving and saw some tarpon rolling past the surf line.
Monday, 9/15, fished out of ponce inlet today. No sign of a mullet run here. There is a tremendous amount of bait offshore but don't think they are mullet. I fished site 5 AR, acres of bait there, I ran a sabiki through them and snagged a few, they were about 3 inches long, cigar minnows I think. I had 4 break offs on large fish, probably sharks,
Sunday 9/14 the port is full of Mullet. Got all the bait needed for the day near the locks in one cast. Fished the north Jetty got several sharks and one snook. Wasted a lot of time fishing the bait pod around the locks.
Surfed last night few miles south of Ponce. That fishy smell was in the air and there was bait, birds and big boils. I found myself more then a few times deciding to lay on my board keeping my limbs out of the water waiting on the next wave. Its a funny feeling when something nails a school of finger mullet and they think the safest place is under or around you!
I'm thinking I might try to do a little fishing from the shore tomorrow either around cocoa area or maybe playalinda. How thick was the bait yesterday/today? Is it it in multiple acre sized schools or smaller pods getting pushed down the beach?
Ideally I'd like to try and work some artificials, any suggestions on best locations?
Anybody interested in teaming up in the morning and covering some ground to find the best action? Send me a PM if so...
There were loads of tarpon busting bait within 15 yard of the beach in Satellite Sunday afternoon about 2 hours after the tide started coming back in. They were cruising the first trough right along the beach. I saw some snook too which I was after but couldn't hookup with any. Had a couple of strikes but only caught one lady fish. I was freelining live mullet...tried the same on the bottom but switched up pretty quick after not getting bites. I don't think I've ever seen bait getting corralled and thrashed for as long as I did Sunday. It was fun just to watch.

I talked to a buddy who fishes often and he said they aren't moving much up here. Shouldn't be long before it is everywhere...
Getting itchy - time to FISH!

What an aerial display...
Ya they were. They were also inside the locks all over the place as well.

Cool thanks! were the pods within casting distance from the beach?
