Some Help

Hey guys,
My son and I are trailering our boat over to the Titusville area from Charlotte County next week and plan to fish Mosquito Lagoon. I have a small poling skiff and we are looking for reds and trout. I was wondering what area of the lagoon we should be targeting: north, middle or south? Not looking for specific spots, just what general area of the lagoon is good at this time of year. Thanks for any info

You'll get a lot of responses from a lot of folks but my experience has been that the southern end (south of the Haulover Canal) is a little better for trout and the north for reds, but I've had good luck all over the place. Just work the flats and the transitional water around the flats and you'll find some action. This time of year the early bird gets the fish. You really want to be out there ready to go when the sun cracks. Once it gets up and the water temps sky rocket the only thing you can do is anchor up in the canal and soak bait deep for bull reds (which is fun when you get hooked up but when you're not you're just sitting there baking). The other thing to consider if you're staying in the area is to go out in the evening on the back sides of the afternoon storms. Once those storms cool the water down it can be game on.

A couple other things I remind folks not from the area who haven't fished the ML before is that one - all the ramps in the national wildlife refuge have a 5 buck usage fee. There's no attendants so have some ones or a five handy. Two - you need a free self-issuing permit to fish in the ML in addition to your regular license. Just search online for Mosquito Lagoon fishing permit, or Meritt Island NWR fishing permit, print it, sign it, and keep it with your license.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

If you have a federal duck stamp...you do not need to pay the ramp fee....It will also get you in any Federal wildlife refuge that has a fee to enter.

Even when it's not duck hunting season?
