Western most island SW of the mouth of St Martins river, or the western most island on the reef.
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.

    That is it.
BTW those Bird Keys, the one that still has some mangroves is NW Bird Key, one that is just a rockpile is/was Chicken Dinner Key.
So named for all the curlews that were shot off it for dinner.

Yeah, it's only Bird Key now.

If you don't believe that the sea level is rising, use the time slider on Google Early. You can watch Bird Keys disappear over time.

In the late 80's early 90's the redfish used to school there big time and would catch them all over that flat back to St. Martin river mouth.

It's still NW Bird Key to those that matter.

Just being here since the early 60's, had some of the old charts until the 93 storm.

On the new charts there is a key called Drum Key between the mouth of Fish Creek and Mangrove Pt., that used to be called Trout Key until aprox mid 1990's.

Unfortunately most of the old names(which actually meant something) are forgotten.

Ox Gap was one of the haul overs where the old cedar cutters could take an oxen team to access islands to cut cedar for the pencil mill.
Not too many folks know the name of that cut or where it is.
Give ya a hint, it's 3/4 of a mile from Pirates Cove.

Bird Key shows up on the "Weather Channel" map when put on radar mode…….zoomed in and the name came up for me.

Chair Island(some call it Cherry) is on the back side of Waddington island. There used to be 3 houses on Chair island and some of the Boswell family were born and raised there, Frank Boswell, (lives in Tropic Terrace now and in not the best health) was born there many moons ago. Unfortunately most of the old homesteads (with no real papers or deeds) were just camps when the DEP bought the islands in the early 90's and were torched.

Ox gap is SE of Cliftons Cove bar(now Pecks).

from being on the water for 65 years, I know the water level is not rising.

for instance same water marks on my buddies place in the keys that he bought in 1967.

same level at the boat ramp I've been using since 1959.

but there are some bars that are getting washed away.

    You're only 54?! :huh

Why you're still a youth. You don't earn your grumpy curmudgeon card until you get to be at least 65. Here all this time you've been telling us stories that people told you. Thought that you lived through it all yourself. :grin

lived thru some of it, i also paid attention when my elders talked.

First picture was one of the old mailboats that my Dad bought, me in the boat probably 1964 or so.
I had uploaded two pics at a time for another forum so don't think the mullet boat is recent.

Only problem with listening to old guys is that we are often full of crap. :wink

When I was a kid, I always took what the old guys said with a grain of salt. Now that I'm an old guy, I appreciate the wisdom of my younger self. :rotflmao
