So Who's shooting/practicing?

flydownflydown Posts: 6,464 Admiral
Sorry I don't have any sub 4" groups from 150 to post up :wink, (Always forget to pocket my phone when shooting) but I"m sure there are some of you (like me) that have started launching carbon into foam/rags. (Iowa can't get here fast enough!)

I'll try and remember to take a pic later this afternoon when I robinhood my 3, of my, count 'em, 4 remaining arrows.
Yep, time to hit up A.T. for some carbon.

Let's see them groups, fellas.

Was hitting 9" paper plates at 50 yards Sunday (4 arrows maybe 6-8" grouping with a couple tacking next to next by bullseye-so some form issues) with my new arrows. re-Adjusted the sites. Will paper tune next week. Had company and had to socialize this time vs spending all the time with my bow. SWELTERING OUT THERE...

Got ALLOT more speed and QUIET w/ new arrows..loved how they removed from target . recessed inserts w/ smaller diameter shaft that field tip..

Sounds like you're shooting Axis arrows. Been shooting them myself for the past 5 years. Love 'em!

Dude, with groups like that, you better start shooting spots if you intend on not destroying your arrows!

7 years old , he's 9 going on 10 . I had him shooting a bear longbow at 4 years old . Then moved him to a genesis buckmaster Jr I believe was the name . Now he's shooting a Parker Sidekick XP with limbs 30-40 lbs . He's at 36Lbs now and shoots real good out to 35 yards . But we shoot at least twice a week at 3D and field targets .

Shot some good groups today. No bigger than 4" at 40 yards. I'm happy with that. Gotta refletch a few arrows tonight. Shot a little too good 30 yards and in.

YUP! 9 grams per inch shooting 400's on my SBXT...real sweet shaft..should have upgraded a long time ago. Increased my range substancially..my 5th pin at max setting was a 45 yard shot (setup 10,20,30,40,45- real kinetic drop after 40 yards)...now it's 50 with room to go to 60 if I want..I have a 10 Yard pin for straight down shots from a treestand 18 ft up..no holding low..a dead on shot.

Looking forward to hunting with em....

Basically retaught myself to shoot this year. My diamond is pretty dead on at 30. It's a shame it's gonna be my last season hunting with her before I go Full Throttle.

I took myself and started from scratch. Had a couple guys evaluate my form and went from there. I ended up extending my DL and cranking down my bow. April and May was basically all strength training. I did not shoot over 20 for that time. All I did was watch every little thing about my form until it became habit. I frequently recorded video of myself on my phone and saw what I was doing. My groups out to 30 did not really change, but out to 60 is now where I shine. I am in total a more proficient shooter now and think it's time for a big boy bow. To handle an unforgiving bow like Full Throttle I'm gonna have to be as solid as possible.

While I appreciate your dedication and form corrections, (I shoot blank bale for the first week I start practicing every summer to get my own form correct)
I do have to ask why you want to shoot an unforgiving bow? I'm assuming (Not familiar with the Full Throttle bow) that it has a 6" or so brace height to make it unforgiving.
I understand shooting a 6" brace height back when you needed extra speed and KE, but with so many 7" brace height bows shooting in the low 300's, why would you want to shoot an unforgiving bow?

Edit: Just looked at the Full Throttle by PSE. 5.25" Brace height? Yep. That's gonna be unforgiving. Don't be seduced by speed. And as long as you're hunting whitetails, there is absolutely no need for that kind of KE unless you plan on trying to bust right through the shoulder bone.

I know that program. I hunt a few places that you better hear them first so you can get bow up on knee and release on string. By the time you see the deer it's too late. Good news is they are easy shots. I know it's frowned upon here, but I'll sometimes take cross bow into such spots. Legal and effective.

Admittedly, I'm torn here. While I want hunting to grow and gain in popularity, I also often find myself in judgement of perfectly healthy men choosing to use a crossbow, rather than a bow you have to draw in the heat of the moment, during bow season.

I'm working on getting over this as I know it's upon us and is becoming more and more accepted.

    Exactly.

But... and I'm still holding on to this.. At least the compound shooter still has to draw his bow with his quarry in close proximity, whereas the crossbow shooter does not.

No matter what anyone thinks, If they legalize them on public, I'm buying one. I'm a pretty good bow shot and have been shooting a bow for probably 25 years. I'm pulling my hair out trying to get mine tuned after a string replacement, wishing I could just use a crossbow. Florida is so high on modeling everything after other states, you'd think they would have already legalized them.

THIS...If it does get allowed I *HOPE* they require BLAZE ORANGE just like gun season..GOD KNOWS I"D BE DECKED OUT WITH FLASHING NEON LIGHTS ...I *HOPE* they leave it as is or put them in muzzy if at all...the Frickin X-Bow money has ruined other states. IMHO

Dusted the bow off this afternoon. This was at 30 yards, groupings were pretty consistent out to 40 yards. up to 30 yards is my comfort zone for deer.

I was at the range once with a guru and a newbie. The guru had better form than the newbie. I watched them both shoot their bows then I watched them shoot an unforgiving bow.
The guru's groups were identical to his previous consistently.
    The newbie's groups spread slightly.
Does brace height matter and have an effect?
    Yes
But it is all relative IMO
If you have someone that shoots with great form (guru) it probably will not effect them as much as somebody with ok (newbie) form.
While the bow I'm looking at does not have the smooth draw cycle of an Energy 35 nor the anti cam lean of the Prime Defy, it is a very enjoyable bow to shoot.
As for speed and KE, I was born a runner. Long legs and short arms that sport a whopping 26.5 DL.
My bow is probably shooting 260 cranked down and I would like more.
And of all the bows that I've tried, the FT really appeals to me.
I know you are a sworn Elite shooter (and I don't blame you because the Energy series is AWESOME) but you should shoot it just to see. It's really not the firecracker people make it out to be.

Why would it be less safe than a with a vertical bow? Still an arrow, still 300+ fps as a lot of newer bows are, still about a 50yard max range. I think there are a lot of unfounded fears about crossbows. How many people have been shot with a crossbow in Georgia, or any other state where they are legal? Has Georgia been ruined by "Frickin X-bow money"?

I don't like the whole crossbow idea either. In my opinion they should be for women, children, and the elderly. There is now reason that a grown man that is fully capable of pulling a regular string bow back should be aloud to use a crossbow during archery. If they let them use them during ML that is fine. To many advantages using a crossbow opposed to a regular bow to make it fair. JMO

You are correct in your opinion that everything is indeed relative. Most seasoned shooters can shoot tight groups with just about any bow with time to familiarize themselves with the equipment. But, and this is the but I found out a couple years ago. Sometimes, when hunting, you are faced with a shot opportunity that won't allow you perfect form. In my case, I was faced with a shot that required me to shoot over my climber cables, as the deer was back and left of the tree I was hunting out of. I don't know if I could have made this shot with a low brace height bow. Maybe I could have, maybe not.

Just know that some hunting situations don't allow perfect form even though we strive for in our practice routines. As well we should.
Now, I had no idea you had Tyrannosaurus arms. Lol! But just know that I hunt with a guy that has a 26" draw length. He's a whopping 5'3" tall and he routinely kills deer with a 6 year old Mathews SBXT. The bottom line is that speed is not as important as we tend to think.

However, if you enjoy shooting the PSE, then by all means get yourself one and start busting nocks! Transparently, I haven't shot a short brace bow in a few years, so I shouldn't judge. The last one I shot was a Hoyt Alpha Burner and it wasn't for me. But I know the newer speed deamons have come a long way in terms of a smoother draw.

As for the Elite series of bows, yes, I have indeed become a fan. They are very smooth and at my age, I appreciate the high degree of letoff and hard valley they have. However, I try and stay a year or two behind the latest model to save cash, so I haven't gripped an Energy 35 just yet. But I hear they are fantastic. I just found a new in the box 2013 snow camouflage Answer on AT for a steal. I am hoping to have within a week or two. Not sure how I will like a white bow, but they've grown on me over the last couple years.

So post up that new baby when you get it, and good shooting!
