The Record...

So, Yesterday was a poo pile...The first two spots I was hitless. Then at spot three I knew it would be rough when I jumped off a small snook then caught one about 20 inches after missing a couple hits. Just before I left there, I caught another snook about the same size as the first. It was now 7 AM....and I never got another hit till I caught another snook of about 20 inches at 10 AM....I only saw 1 trout and 1 Red . The water everywhere from Sebastian to North Vero was junk...and there was little bait. Time for a change of venue.

So, Today I am getting fuel and decide to take a double load ($20) so I can do some long range scouting. I decide I will launch at Yacht club and fish North of the inlet...and this part is key...Since I launched in Sebastian I can fish and look up north with the ability to fall back towards Sebastian on the top of the tide. In the water early and I hit a few spots as I go... As it gets towards grey...I pick up and run to what i consider a trout spot. First fish on the white/greenie CAL is a snook...then...another..and another. All Cookie cutter 18-20 inchers. I head north and at the next spot I hook up something really nice along the 'groves but it powers toward the thick stuff and I turn up the heat..just a bit too much..POP! :banghead
Finish the spot after a new leader and jig/tail and get another snook...a little bigger at 22 inches. I keep moving north since by now I can see the water is pretty junky and I want to look at some of my other spots to the north. By now I'm a good ways north and decide to try a Hail Mary and run to this little grass bar...maybe 100 feet long that most times has a couple small trout around it...and...IT DOES! A little fella..but i'll take it. OK, Here's where it could all go badly. It is 8:30 and I am about 9 miles North of any of my reliable Reds since I have not fished up north in over a month and who knows what has changed in that much time.
The whole Idea was to check conditions...but I was only a Red away....so....
I hit a couple spots as I work south but they are all empty. :huh It's 9:35 and I won't be back to where I have caught Reds till 10 but I have to go that way to the ramp anyway..so I run. I get there just after 10....and the fish are there too! :) ...but...
They are spooky...really spooky. Several nice presentations with live wiggler...live pinfish...live small crab...dead wiggler.... all refused! Take a chance and slice and dice the pinfish.... a couple more refusals and just as I am ready to bag it... I think to myself It's getting hot " Lets work off the spot down wind/current and get going toward home" As I move that way I see two big trout at the edge of a large pothole and i don't really want them...I throw to the far end of the hole blindly...and feel a pick up...and it runs off so hard it hooks itself. At first I figure it's a trout...but some strong runs and I catch a glimpse...OH YES!

The last two days have been hard...Fished north of the inlet.
Yesterday was a ladyfish at grey light(saved for bait)...then a 18 inch Red on the CAL...then a 21 inch Red on a chunk of ladyfish.

Today was not much better with a jack in the dark....then a 18 inch Red with 7 spots

    ...a mangrove snapper
    IMG_20140727_071526_zpshjn7ej7w.jpg

    IMG_20140727_075142_zpsi1gr4wpi.jpg

and another Red and another jack..Hot.... so headed in at 8:45

Water was pretty poor but there was some decent water around Honest Johns & VIP island....

After two hard days up above the inlet today I stayed close to home. It's funny how home waters can give you an advantage. My first spot was a blank but my second stop I got a bottom slot Trout. That gave me some hope so I left and ran to a snook spot....and half way down the shoreline I caught a 20 inch snook.
As I came to the end of the best of the habitat...I got this guy.

Not a monster but in the slot at 18 1/2 inches.....7:02 and that is #66

My next spot I caught a small snook at 7:22 AM....

Went to try and get a bigger Red...but hooked up a nice trout that shook off...saw a couple Reds that would not eat. Back to the ramp at 9:30.

    Nice as always JR!!

Sir, I know you are a BIG fan of the color white and green and I agree especailly for me with snook. But JR, do you ever experiment with the Golden Bream color. I have done quite well with it. Most of the time I wonder if it ever makes a difference what we throw at them.
When they are hungry, they are hungry period,.....

    Thanks

Jim, I experiment with EVERY color from time to time... I bought the "mixed bag" deal DOA had on their site (50 CAL's @ $2.50) and got some oddball (to me ) stuff.
The one that was a shocker was what I nicknamed " Ridiculous Red"...Red body with a chartreuse tail. Snook loved it!

I think PRESENTATION is EVERYTHING.... a quiet entry with the lure coming the right direction for how the fish are oriented in the spot....

As for color...really dirty summer water has me throwing more loud colors...clear water i like white (early AM ) and natural baitfish colors.

Winter when predators are keying less on finfish and more on shrimp...then the browns like Golden brim and tan colors look more shrimp/crab and I like them at that time.

A lot of work and frustration to get #67...but made it happen today after totally effing myself out of it yesterday.

Tuesday was a stinker with a nice low/mid twenties Trout first off...then a lot of casts to get three snook...but the couple Reds I saw were not eating plastic.
Wednesday was worse....7 Snook and a ladyfish....Every point had one snook on it it seemed.
Yesterday, My laziness got me. I was overdue for a respool but didn't do it. The first spot I get a bottom slot Red...not long after I get hooked up to a real nice mid twenties trout...get it close to the boat and one last short run and pop...she's gone! :banghead I stay in the area for over an hour and not another bump. Disgusted, I head to just catch a fish or two before it's time to go....and catch a 22 inch snook. As I am ready to leave...I hook up a nice snook and get it close....and POP..another broken line. I recheck the line and find that every 4 or 5 feet...there is a weak spot...?? Really mad at myself for not changing out line ( a whole..50-75 cents worth?) the evening before. So I had the trout on..but lost it...and lost a nice snook...and caught a small Red and a small snook..... I screwed myself.

OK, Today I'm all relined and ready...Start tossing the white head/white CAL and get a nice 23 inch Trout on my first spot very early..... the very next cast BAM! ...Fish on...Winds up being this 27 inch snook.

    IMG_20140801_062844_zps56qo3rcu.jpg

Then, after fishing the area and seeing 2 Reds that would not eat...I moved out and tossed the net on some wigglers and ran south to a spot I had a good feeling would have some nice top slot Reds... I'm moving along slow and I see a nice red moving along the 'groves ahead of me but going away. Rather than hurry the shot I wait...and get my shot when she is in a little gap. She turns and eats...and I am all focused and in the game....Hook her and swing the nose of the skiff out away from the 'groves. She's strong and makes a couple attempts to bore into the roots but i keep her out...and get her worked to the net..

    A nice 26 3/4 inch pumpkin.

    It's 8:40 and that's #67.... It's getting hot...on the trailer at 9 AM.
