Subject: Re: Fundacion Los Roques
Dear friends and colleagues,
The Venezuelan dictatorship has issued a decree for the Fundacion Cientifica Los Roques to vacate the premises of the Dos Mosquises Marine Lab in the Archipelago Los Roques National Park. The private institution has a 50-year trajectory of basic and applied marine research and educational programs unparalleled by any other academic institution in the country. I was the Director of the field station for five years and it was a critical formation and learning experience in my life. I am here respectfully requesting that everyone who cares about sustaining regional fishing and local science capabilities sign the opposition pledge (link below) supporting the Foundation.
The Government's arguments and reasons for such a move are obscure, and last week the Venezuelan National Academy of Sciences published a document supporting the 50 year old Scientific Foundation, regretting the position of the Government and calling for reconsideration. There is a petition to revoke the Government decree (link is Included below) and we need to gather at least 5000 signatures to send it to the authorities.
Please access and sign the petition below.
