Yep, reminds me of the days when the FCA had Russ Nelson, staff and most of the FMFC in their pocket.
Frustrating, ain't it?
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.

Well the MFC was certainly never ever in anyway friendly to the recreational fisherman anymore than the current NMFS is, Nelson however was a consultant for CCA after his stint with the MFC. Now the MFC might have been pushing for more conservation in our commercial fisheries and I can certainly see how the commercial fisherman would not like that one bit, and you could probably blame CCA for that as well. What is going on today is just plain old corruption.

Kind of like your gillnet in freshwater dream eh number zero?
So, you are saying that we don't have a gill net program for Gizzard Shad in Lake George or Lake Apopka?
I assure you that we do.

They can be and could have been if they were managed properly, that's the catch.
Now back to the subject of the thread, the NMFS is in bed with the commercial sector and the EDF and they don't like it when they are presented with the facts and the truth so they get rid of the whistle blowers and make up new rules. It is funny how we are hearing literally nothing in the media about all the corruption going on these days in the IRS and virtually every other branch of this administrations government. Holy smokes!

Went to a Tampa restaurant just last night...red snapper was prominently offered as a "special"...I chose pork instead.
The best way to have an impact, as an individual, is to refuse to purchase red snapper (and other gulf species) when its offered via commercial sources.

The problem is NOT the commercial fishermen..............it's the lack of support( by the industry) for the recreational fishermen and the lack of a united front of recreational fishermen.
I mean seriously, how many different "factions" do we have "fighting" for the recs?
United we stand and divided we fall...............the comms figured this out a long time ago.
They saw that for now it's better to get in bed with the NGO's and save their **** "For now"
What they are not seeing is that they are the next target.
THERE SHOULD BE NO COMMERCIAL FISHING ALLOWED FOR ANY SPECIES THAT IS CONSIDERED OVERFISHED.

everyone got one for participating, not won over by a long shot, though the current "Buzzword" seems to be sustainability and a sustainable label which might not be a bad deal.
We shall see here soon.

I just listened to Capt. Scott Hickman promote fish tags for EVERY recreational fisherman EXCEPT those who fish on HIS boat. Interesting.
If fish tags are such a great idea, then why not provide them for ALL Gulf recreational fishermen? It would actually be a better solution for the charter fleet - they would not be limited by an IFQ allocation nor would they have to pay an exorbitant buy-in fee! They could fish year-round taking any recreational fisherman with a fish tag. If a fisherman is walking down the dock with a fist full of fish tags, why should he be limited to what kind of boat he goes fishing on? He should have the right to decide if he wants to step on a charter boat, a headboat, or a friend's boat.

Mostly a marketing scheme sadly. REAL sustainability is good, but would require
a reliable, accurate, complete and current data set to be used. Remember the call
to make reliable science based data a Mandate over the "Best Available Science"?
It was opposed and fought against by guess Who? Yes, EDF flew CFA members,
former SS members, to DC to plead, 'Give the MSA time to work'. Current EDF affiliated
groups are still doing the same, whether their commercial GOM group suing recreational
interest over allocation or their marketing schemes like Gulf Wild's 'traceable', or Seafood Selectors
'Best Choices'. Funny that these are all Catch Share fisheries, though the method of harvest,
the location of the sale and purchase or the species of fish recommended by a collaborative
of chef's on special interest payroll does not determine 'Sustainability".
These same folks are now opposing the 'Strengthening of US Fisheries Act' proposed to allow
fishery managers to do what is best for BOTH fisheries and fishermen. If they REALLY wanted
truly Sustainable Fisheries, they would push to ensure the data and science being used to manage
our fisheries was the "Best" not just the 'Best Available' which has NO provision for eliminating
data that is outdated, incomplete, unreliable or even known faulty.....as long as it happens to
be the 'Best Available'. No wonder why they oppose making any Mandates on the quality of
the science....it would actually determine fishery management by science rather than policy!
I agree it's mostly a marketing scheme.
That was the underlying theme thruout the presentation.

We are always a target.
I had a meeting with these folks yesterday, they got a ton of BP money and probably an agenda too.
