Egret May Trip photos
This year the Tarpon were slow in terms of numbers compared to past trips but there were still plenty of fish around. They seemed to mainly concentrated in the deeper channels rather than on the flats. Permit were also scarce on flats and probably wont be back inshore in numbers for another 10 days or so. We had shots at few larger fish in the lakes last Saturday but no takers. Tarpon seem to be slow to eat the flies during the day but if you have live bait late in the day in most channels it is just a matter of a few minutes at the most before you are hooked up. I caught two in KW on the trip and probably could have hooked some more but gave it up for a chance on the fly. The weather was really great and we still had a large variety of fish caught during the day at Marquesas including a grouper, snapper, some larger jacks to 15 lbs., big cudas and some black tip sharks. We even saw a couple of Cobia. Over the next two to three days I caught several more Tarpon in different locations up the keys in and toward Cudjoe Bay.
