Looking Buy First New Fishing Yak-Thoughts?

RollbarRollbar Posts: 151 Officer
Looking to purchase a fishing Yak until I get a flats boat and I found this one/accessories.
I need something to stand up in and found this boat/accesories.

Ascend FT128T - http://www.basspro.com/Ascend-FS128T-Sit-On-Top-Angler-Kayak-Desert-Storm/product/12102505321115
images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTi1RJm_N-bSoKaBs5fVnMLKiiL-apmV25t7T5hyisNU3SNdERp

Looking at this as well - http://standnfish.com/snf_home/index.html
Might not get the pontoons and just make my own.
p1.jpg

Also looking to get a trolling motor/50lb thrust but not sure the shaft length. Maybe 42 so I can use it on another boat and if I get the stand up tower then I can reach it easier.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jim

Just received this email from Rick/Stand-n-Fish.

    Make since.
    JB,

    Thanks for the inquiry.

The system will fit on that particular kayak. If you are talking about the new FS 128T that has the "lawn chair" type seat you would want to use the pontoons and U-Stand rather the leaning post as this lawn chair seat is not comfortable to stand on. The U-Stand is made and can be installed in such a way to allow you to stand in FRONT of the seat.

I attached a few pictures for you to check out.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Thanks,
    Rick

For a while I thought it was me that posted this, I plan on doing the same thing you are doing and that ascend 128 is really sticking to me as far as the features it has. So when do you plan on getting the kayak?

I almost pulled the trigger last night to order but I wanted to see if the Stand-n-Fish was available (see post #2).

I think I can make their newer model (U-stand) and some pontoons for sure. That will save me some $$ for the trolling motor.

Just want to go over a few things first.

I was going to compromise (wife talking in the other ear) and then I said to my self-self, get what will work best for you.

So I'm about 90% sure on the FT128T.

BUT-I did see this late last night-not sure it will work out.

If memory serves I saw a paddle on-line that had some bends in it for hand placement.

Can anyone recommend a good paddle?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

ok, i think your over thinking this whole thing, i know that when i tried a kayak for the first time last weekend i had a blast. i was able to stand up with rough water with no problem and i was on a cheap $300 kayak just to give you an idea. everything can be fixed and upgraded to your liking. check out poor mans kayak on youtube. he made a cheap kayak and built it for himself and it came out awsome.

Understood. But I need some stabilization due to an old injury-it can only help. Still leaning towards just adding pontoons.

I'll check out the UTube link, thanks again-Jim

That Freedom-Hawk is about as stable as they come with the pontoons deployed.. the 14' version paddles much better than the 12.
Who ever said shorter and lighter == faster was basically incorrect, its not quite that simple.
Wider is not always more stable either.

I pulled the trigger last night to buy the Ascend FS128T on the MFG web site but when I clicked buy here the site took me to Amazon and the boat is not listed on Amazon.

Reason for going to the MFG site is free shipping over $75.00

If I buy from BassPro the shipping is $95.00

My son is going to buy one as well (FS128T), my daughter is going to buy the Pelican Strike 100x from West Marine, and my wife wants one now as well as my other daughter.

So my problem is, trying to find a FS128T from some where that offers free shipping.

We went to a few Yak shops yesterday looking and no luck, but got some good ideas etc.

FYI- Ascend is a BassPro specific product, Tracker is the manufacture and BassPro owns Tracker.

Buy what you want, but I would really rethink any Pelican product.

Me, I would go by my locally owned kayak shop and demo as many boats as possible in the size & style that best fits my paddle & fishing needs.

Well I guess I'm a Yaker-I just pulled the trigger and bought an Ascend FS128T.

Also going to buy the Motorguide 18" shaft, 45lb thrust trolling motor as well.

Thank you for all the help-now the learning/fun begins.
