commercial fisherman running charters ? Guy apparently owns snapper IFQ....

Guess this is legal now??...Anyone know for sure?

wow is all I can say I think society is dumbing down. wonder what happens when the charter just wants a free boat ride and doesn't want to pay for any snapper do you still have to tip the capt. and mate?

This is their way of getting around the stupid rules that fish can't be sold on a charter. Completely legal as the customers are having a great time, the Capt makes money, the fish house makes money and THE SAME AMT of FISH ARE BEING HARVESTED. Seems to me they beat the Feds at their own game. :banana

I actually use to do something like this back in the 1970's.

I once befriended a commercial kingfish hook and line fisherman at Pier 5 (Before Bayside was constructed at the Miami Marina) and asked him if he would let me fish with him for FREE, if i would buy some of the fish I caught at the retail prices he get at his dockside fish sales. He had a mate, so i did not need to do much work except to catch fish for him. I always out fished his mate, so i was invited out several times much to the chagrin of the mate. (I believe the Captain of this boat wanted to demonstrate to his mate that he could be out fished by an amateur, LOL

Yes its completely legal. The boat in question only has a commercial permit on board so he actually can take as many people on the boat that he has commercial safety equipment for. So even tho the boat is a non-certified vessel with the coast guard he can take over 6. Now if the boat is duel permitted with both commercial and charter permits he can only have 4 people on board. He is in his second year of doing the catch share trips and he has about 7000 pounds of quota. Whats sweet about the deal is that he no longer throws dead fish back, as long as the snapper is 13 inches long he keeps it. Most trips he sells 150 pounds of snapper for the trip, and he is able to keep up to 30 or more red snapper making up the 150 pounds. Pretty awesome way to sell fish.
