About the Italian family not much accurate IMO.
A lot of sealed foods, no fish, no cheese, no wine, etc.
Especially for a sicilian family the fish lack is ridicolous, they live of fish.
Also for their too many crappy foods compared to the reality, as I can see.

In any case pretends the truly truth by journalists is utopic.

I couldn't imagine paying $342 a week for groceries! We spend less than half of that for a family of 4.

Not all Americans eat the way depicted either...:grin

(Some of these I've posted before)

the makings for tabouli salad, with grilled, pulled chicken and splashes of red wine vinegar a great pita pocket stuffer

vegetable beef soup with feta, basil and cracked black pepper salad

scallop (fresh bay scallops) fritters (recipe from mikehels)

boudin making - home raised pork

fresh caught flounder stuffed with fresh caught crabmeat and parmesan topping

Our traditional New Years Eve feast

We have a big party (what we call a pitch-in, guests brings a dish to share) on Christmas Eve and last year I asked everyone to bring something that was special to them in past holidays. One friend of ours was married to an Italian (she's Polish) and they always celebrated the Feast of the Seven Fishes...she brought Pasta con Sarde, which she said was one of his favorites. Sadly there were no fresh sardines to be found so she had to make do with canned...it was so strong with the canned fish we could hardly eat it.
Her other Italian dishes are yummy!

Ecuador, $32 a week, sounds like I could retire there and eat pretty good.

What stood out to me was the amount of bottled water. Almost every family had 10 gallons or so of bottled water in their pic. I would think investing in a decent filter would be cheaper.

We take for granted that the water from the tap is clean...and filter it for 'taste'. It is not so easy to filter out disease causing bacteria, etc.
In some areas of the world tourists are urged to refrain from bushing teeth with tap water.

Yet the 2 poorest famalies, both living on dirt floors had no water in their picture.

Do you think that is because they don't drink water or that their bodies have immunities to the bacteria commonly found in their water?

Bacteria is easy to remove from water, boil it.

Different regions of the world, different gut bacteria needed. That is not to say some places have crappy water. Like Florida will, if the right wingers get their way. :wink

Notice there were more than groceries. There was beer, pizzas, Burger King, Mc D's... I have a family of 4 and easily spend $200 at the grocery store every week and my boys are teenagers yet. If you include mine and my wife's lunches and eating out as a family that's easily another $200. This doesn't include going out to sit down dinners with drinks.

    Key words!

When my son was a teenager we fortunately lived in Boca near the IBM plant where PCs were first developed and manufactured.

With the help of a good neighbor who worked there, we purchased one of the first computers, so our house was a magnet for a few other neighbor boys.

So far as food goes back then, it was not unusual to see $200 (or more) disappear on food at my weekly foraging at Costco.

Wonderful days and memories for both my wife and I.

Those boys all went on to be very successful and accomplished, I'm proud to say.

Beer is not groceries! I'd have to add $20-30 a week for beer which would still put us under $200 a wk. We rarely buy junk or fast food and pack our lunches. Our boys are 14 and 16.

Spending over $20,000 a year on food seems extreme to me! I guess we are much more frugal than others.
