Conferences

2amigo2amigo Posts: 8,951 Admiral
I know a lot of you Nole fans don't like to hear about conferences but it happens to be a fact of life in college sports. Rustynail was on here not too long ago espousing the weakness of SEC basketball. I wonder what he has to say now with two SEC members in the final four. And Tennessee made a better showing than most of the ACC schools that were in the tournament. Just heard today on ESPN about the SEC and basketball. It's talked about on all sports stations as well as with all sports. As good as FSU was in football are they undefeated in the SEC? Probably not, But I still think they would've played in the championship game. Just a thought.

GATOR homer here, conferences don't mean a thing to me
if it's not the GATORS than i'd rather see another in state team win over an sec team anytime, it's a matter of state pride

I'm kinda like Frank. Unless it's someone whooping the gata, I don't care about conferences.

That said, I mostly like secsecsec teams over Yankee or West Coast teams.

Gators first then I root for all Florida teams. Their fans now, that's another story. I have an equal opportunity ignore list. :grin

I'm split. I will root for Florida teams to a degree. Championships not so much. I am not an SEC homer but I like the fact we play in the toughest conference in football. And it's nice to see the SEC represent well in the basketball tournament.

I just....can't do it. Maybe if I had attended and graduated FSU during a different era? Maybe if we had been better while I was there? I just can't root for UF or UM in ANYTHING! I enjoyed watching UM try and make a run in the NCAA BB tourney last year however.

Example: I'll be rooting for Uconn vs UF and then whoever may play them in the title game. I do not want to see UF win, sorry. Call me bitter, call me whatever you want...I wouldn't mind seeing UF go 4-8 every year in football.

The SEC is making a big showing this year, however they have always been a "strong" conference if you judge it by how many teams are in the final four. Kentucky is a perennial elite 8 type team, and UF has been very, very good since 2004-2005 IMHO.

The SEC having teams in the final four isn't a "new" thing, at least in my humble 26 year old opinion. The SEC has just always been so top-heavy when it comes to Bball.

I think the story line this year is less so about the SEC being good in basketball, and more so about just how BAD the ACC was this year and the overall performance in the tourney considering how good those teams typically are ( Duke, UNC, Cuse, Pitt etc) the SEC looks better because of how bad the ACC was. Does that make sense? I'm not de-valuing the success the SEC had, it just shines a little brighter when the ACC faceplanted.

The only reason I care about conference strength is because it makes my team better to play in a great conference. You may get good in practice, but you get to be great playing in top-flight competition games.

If you use BCS bowl games and the Final Four as the metric and look at the last 25 years, in Football its the SEC then everybody else. In BB, its the ACC, then the SEC, then everybody else.

    Tourney records...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it easier to have a better win percentage with a smaller sample size?

EX: SEC has 3 teams, if they all do well = best record

ACC has 6 teams, they can't all do well, so even if 3 go on to win the same # of games as the 3 SEC teams then the win % will be diluted. This isn't the best metric to express the success of the SEC vs terrible performance by lets say the ACC.

Also, let me add that this chart does not account for seeding? The SEC has 3 teams who were seeded high (UF #1, KU #2) and thus had more favorable matchups during the first round.

Again, the teams within the SEC did very well in the dance this year. I'm not trying to take anything away from the success y'all have experienced this season. Just wanted to point out some things.

Go KU, UConn and Whisky :wink

What's the winning % of the top three ACC teams in the tourney?

Ok ignore the PCT. Just go with the win/loss.

Yes UF had better matchups, because they are the best team in college.

But that is offset by what KY has done...destroy their region!

I'm not denying that the SEC has dominated, because it has. I just don't see them as "the dominant" conference in BB. That title still belongs to the ACC IMHO(esp with Cuse + Pitt and later ND).

This was an off year, the ACC will be back. Just like UF had an off year, I wouldn't expect it to happen again (i.e. only one ACC team in the sweet 16)

Kentucky finally started playing team ball, I mean....they have all the talent in the world on that squad! Kentucky vs Whisky may be one of the best games of the year. I believe that UF is going to bulldoze Uconn.

Which team would give UF the most fits? KU or Whiskey?

No clue, I know it's not good.

What I'm getting at is the Big 10 for example had 6 teams...and one made the final four, right? Thus 1/6 ain't very good. Then again there are only 4 teams in the FF. SEC had 3, and 2 made the final four. It's easier to have a better win PCT with a smaller sample size. Basic, right?

Again, I never said once that the SEC doesn't deserve the credit and the ACC should be ashamed of their showing in the tourney.

    Let me re-quote myself.

Again, the teams within the SEC did very well in the dance this year. I'm not trying to take anything away from the success y'all have experienced this season.

Way to add to the thread, as usual.

If UF wasn't in the final four, y'all would still be waving the SEC flag for KU....that is the difference. I'd cheer for L'ville b/c it means more $$$ in FSU's pockets, it has nothing to do with conference pride aka SEC-fanboydom

11 wins with only 3 tournament teams is insane.

    14--will never be topped!
