What is better for trolling braid or mono. I know that the thinner diameter line get the lures deeper but i keep hearing that you should never use braid for trolling.
Mono. Need that bit of line stretch so the hookset isn't as abrupt as with braid. Also if the targeted fish jumps (like sails or mahi) then the stretch helps as well.
You could maybe achieve the same with braid and very light drag, but having a dedicated mono outfit is just easier.
The only time I troll w/Braid is if I'm trying to get my lures down deep (trolling Stretch 30s, etc) & then I try to keep the drag as light as possible...
There should be NO Commercial Fishing for any fish species considered 'Over-fished' , 'Undergoing Overfishing' or Subject to Recreational Seasons, Limits, or Closures... Game Fish Status IS the Answer !!!

well if i have to troll with mono then is 30 lb mono enough for pulling in grouper
If I'm trolling for Grouper (as above) I'm using Braid, but I know guys that do it w/30lb mono...

Mono for Surface/Sub-Surface Trolling (w/Braid Backing on some of them) & Braid for Pulling Deep Lures... Most of my Conventional Reels have ~60-100lb Braid...

All of my trolling reels have about a hundred yards of mono. Then they are backed with a mile of braid. That hundred yards gives plenty of stretch, and braid providers tons more capacity and less drag / bow in line on a huge fish that might run a few hundred yards out in a hurry. Have caught countless wahoo with this set up trolling at 13.5 knots, so that should providing enough stretch.
Mono for most trolling, (dolphin, sails, marlin, etc - trolling on the surface or just below) When trolling stretches for grouper, I use 30# braid and back off the drag. If you want to troll for grouper with mono, I'd suggest 50#
AnTLDs, Penn 6/0s, Makaira 30, Penn Intl 30s, Makaira 15s (not fast.with these), etc.

this is 550 yards a 65 pound Braid, thenput 150 yards a 60 pound mono and 25 feet of double after bimini twist. FG knot for mono to braid. this setup can do battle with most anything that I'm going to run into.
