Researchers from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health gathered data from six states – California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia – that perform toxicology tests on drivers involved in fatal car accidents. This data included over 23,500 drivers that died within one hour of a crash between 1999 and 2010. Li reported in the study that alcohol contributed to about 40 percent of traffic fatalities throughout the decade. The researchers found that drugs played an increasing role in fatal traffic accidents. Drugged driving accounted for more than 28 percent of traffic deaths in 2010, which is 16 percent more than it was in 1999. The researchers also found that marijuana was the main drug involved in the increase. It contributed to 12 percent of fatal crashes, compared to only 4 percent in 1999. “If a driver is under the influence of alcohol, their risk of a fatal crash is 13 times higher than the risk of the driver who is not under the influence of alcohol,” Li said. “But if the driver is under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana, their risk increased to 24 times that of a sober person.”
Significantly, the study cites marijuana use as the leading culprit for the swelling number of drug related traffic deaths, contributing to 12 percent of 2010 crashes. This represents a 300% increase compared with four percent in 1999. The study qualifies the pot statistics by emphasizing that because marijuana stays in the blood for up to one week, therefore, researchers said, "the prevalence of nonalcohol drugs reported in this study should be interpreted as an indicator of drug use, NOT NECESSARILY A MEASUREMENT OF DRUG IMPAIRMENT."
Welll....DUH??? The poor sap that smoked a joint last week and died in a car wreck today is included in your "tripling" stats... Same as the poor sap who smoked yesterday, or the day before that, or the day before that, etc....
You wouldn't expect more people to partake occasionally, but not necessarily drive whilst partaking, now that it is legal in some places, would you? :shrug

Obviously, people (who shall remain nameless) that are well known to frequently consume excessive amounts of alcohol need to have their firearms properly secured by the local law enforcement agencies.

Razor taught me that if the slack jaw cops were not just sitting around jacking their plows they could have stopped the marijuana from coming into this country which would have put the drug dealers out of business which would have made it so no pot being sold to this upstanding citizen and this would have never happened, now I really hate cops! You stinking slobs why don't you do your jobs instead of sitting around the station eating donuts and petting each other's ego's! Stupid heads

bottom of the gene pool most likely the cause......I'm betting even without pot being involved she'd be a P.O.S parent and this won't be the last dumb *** stunt she'll do with that poor kid.
Well, if it's the lack of smart genes, how bright of a move is to legalize dope for these geniuses. :grin

I usually leave mine at home with the dog to play with each other
I guess that means we should criminalize the consumption of alcohol.
