Time for another Reel Estate Brevard fishing report! We decided to look for cobia on Sunday 2-23-14. Dave and Debby had gone on 2-22-14 and ran south running the beach looking for rays and free swimmers and didn't see anything. We figured we would go out to the reefs and bottom fish and see if any cobia swam up to the boat. Dave, Debby, Allison and I left sunrise marina a little before 10 to fog, Lots and lots of fog. Visibility was probably 1/4 mile or so. We dialed in the radar and decided to stop by the buoys to see if there were any Tripletail hanging out. After checking around 4 we decided to just head out to our spots.
We found plenty of small red snapper, grunts, and lizardfish and one Lane Snapper that went in the box for dinner. I decided to send a cobia jig to the bottom and after about 5 minutes of jigging right near the bottom I thought I was hung on the bottom. I keep pulling and it starts to fight back! After a few minutes and about 80' of line later a nice (personal best for me) Flounder meets the net and joins the lane snapper on ice for dinner! Its a little after 1:00 and we decided to run in and look for rays on the way. Visibility was starting to improve and it was still flat calm, a beautiful day on the water, and enough fish for dinner.
We talked to a few people at the marina and the Cobia just weren't out there today.
