Family size decreases - Homes size increases

Perhaps we know why U.S. citizens fail to save $'s

In the 1950's the average home size in the U.S. was 984 square feet while today it is nearly 2400 square feet. While the average home has more than doubled the averaged family size has decreased from 3.59 people in the 50's to 2.55 today. Of course these are averages and I know my family was larger in the 50's but my parents house was much larger than even today. I grew up in a household of 6 and sure wouldn't have wanted to live in a 2000 s.q. ft house much less 984.

Think I'll look at medians.

    I'm in the downsize mode.

One daughter just started at UGA(THWG!) and the other has 2.5 years left in high school, then it's me and the wife.

Current house is 7,039(1,893 is finished basement) square feet heated and the new house will only be 4,529(1,945 is finished basement) heated.

I wanted to go smaller, but just couldn't manage it.

The house that we had before the current house was 1,500 square feet heated.

It trips me out that so many folks are having "hard times" and they have two new SUV's 5 wide screen TV's, kids playing expensive travel sports, everyone has an I-Phone, ect. Whatever happened to living within your means?

There were 19 kids on my fathers side & 13 on my mothers side. I had aunts & uncles I never even met. One of my uncles & his family on my mothers side is pretty well known in Bunnell FL. My mother is the only one still living from both sides & she is 86.

That's a big house GA Fin. The biggest house I've ever worked on plans for was just a little over 8,000 heated. I don't think the man ever had it built either.

My d Dad was one of ten kids and each aunt and/or uncle seemed to have 4-6 kids so I had a bunch of cousin growing up plus extended cousins as my grandparents each had 6-10 brothers and sisters.

The house I grew up in was roughly 6000 sq ft, no basement and it sometimes seemed crowded with 6 of us living there.

    I'm a homebuilder.

I built the house 10 years ago with the intention of selling it two years later and realizing $500,000 tax free gain.

I got busy and never found a piece of property that I wanted to build our last house on(although we bought a couple). Finally I found a small tract that was decent(not perfect) so we are gonna get it built, move and then put the present house on the market.
