Homosassa river 1/25/14

Well, I was thinking you can never have enough Ladyfish in the freezer. I mean they taste so go "once you feed them to Grouper"!! So with that in mind we took the new action craft up the river. I have been out 3 or 4 time on it so far, but DeAnna has yet to enjoy it, so off we went. Kyle "troutman" said he and Jacob had landed some snook up by the springs, so I decided to try that first. We headed up to the springs and pitched Mirolures towards the docks, but the snook eluded us. Maybe the 10,000 Manatees scared them off. We did manage to land a few Mangrove snapper, they were just a little bigger than the lures we were throwing. We then proceeded back to a bend in the river where I have tore the ladyfish up before. It was a little slow to start, but once we found a spot where they were hitting, it was on. Now I have noticed that there is a key factor in getting the lady fish to bite. Slow twitches with a pause. I reel slow with like 2 big pulls, and then let it settle a bit, just for like 2 -3 seconds then repeat. When they do hit its about 90% of the time right after or at the end of that pause. It was kinda hard to convey that to my wife, but once I had at least 12 in the cooler and she didn't have any, I think she figured out she was going to have to do that same technique. She did.. She slowed down, and then started landing them. Some other gentlemen in a boat came by and asked if we were catching anything, and I told them lots of ladyfish. They said thats what they were after but couldn't seem to find any. I told them where to go, and then watched them. They were reeling to fast, with no pauses, and after about 15 minutes I saw them pull one in the boat. They are fun to catch, sometimes the breach the water like a marlin, and shake like crazy, thats when I pretend I'm catching some big monster off of Costa Rica or something.. We got back to the dock, and cut'em up for Grouper/Redfish bait, final count was about 22. I didn't know catching bait could be so fun.
