I saw a bird that looked exactly like this photo struttung around my yard this morning. I thought it was injured or baby turkey (or something) because it was acting lost, and ran away instead of flying. Then, when cornered, it flew away to the next yard. I never saw a bird like this around here (Gainesville). I think it's a Grouse.

I'm going with immature quail - last spring's bird. It takes about a year for them to get their mature colors.
The pic you posted is a Ruffed Grouse, I sorta doubt its what you saw.....often times shooting preserves will release birds that look kinda similar to ruffed grouse from a distance, maybe a chuker partridge etc....
