My son and 2 of his friends got 2 each on lake Kissimmee last week.

We had a blast this weekend, took two kids out Sat morning one 5 one 9 and had them in the blind eating donuts,getting buzzed by birds...took a nice airboat ride on the way in,saw an incredible amount of wading birds,and had a nice conversation at the ramp with a gentlemen who bagged a limit. Then proceeded to the breakfast spot,then off to a nap.........all along,nobody told us when we had to be there, where we needed to park,when we had to be back in,or how many shells we could carry. All in all a great morning!

It's amazing how much people complain about and find blame in places where there is none, all because they aren't having it easy. Access restrictions, more rules, limitations, etc... are all just ways to regulate others so that those in favor of the increased restrictions can feel they're on a level playing field. Unless a regulation has sound scientific biological reasoning behind it and is instituted for the sake of managing the game itself, stop trying to regulate people. It doesn't work. It's just another way to get even with those who are having more fun or success than others. Nothing more.

It's also comical how angry these restrictionists get at the few of us here opposing them simply because we combat their whining with facts. I'll keep saying it... worry less about others and concentrate on hunting and having fun. Hunting is supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, perhaps you should take up another hobby because you're doing this one wrong.

Amen Chuck. Its not about killing a limit everytime or bashing the other hunter who's not a pro or biologist like you.... its about having fun and enjoying your time outdoors. Also, it's about giving back and showing others the way.

Read the thread when a daily count down to 100 widgeon was taken place. At the end of the thread when the location was posted look and see how many posted, "I never knew that place was huntable". And how many asked, "where is this place".

Nothing like destroying your backyard and then blaming the damage on others. Loose lips run off ducks not pressure.

As far as someone saying I'm sore because I'm not having it easy...I don't like it easy. I prefer the non quota areas and the challenge in hunting places most people think suck because I don't like crowds.

Are the STA's pulling ducks from elswhere in the state (notice I didn't say stealing...not my term, never used it) and are they getting better?

These same conversations are going on in other forums so sometimes I forget what I post where. I've only been duck hunting for a little over a decade but know alot of people and have learned from a few who've been at it for alot longer. In regards to the first question, I've heard enough of these people who know alot about ducks and duck behavior have their suspicion to think that it's not an absurdity.

How much is anyone's guess but I think the harvest data shows it's possible. True, harvest numbers for certain STA's have remained constant for the most part but some have expanded alot. I don't hunt them so I don't know the when's and where's of adding extra hunters or reduction of permits, but do know that opportunities have increased. What's also increased is the number of birds harvested. From a low of 17,286 in 07-08 to a high of 41,693 last year. If you look at number of birds harvested, it's gotten better. If you look at the increase in certain species being harvested, some would also say it's better. If you look at birds per hunter, it's stayed pretty constant. I guess it's how you interpret better.

Posts have been made to say it's slow there this year but prior to the weekend that just ended 25,474 birds had been killed so far. With 4 weekends left at the time of that number, they're pretty much on pace with last year....in a year where a large portion of the state is having on all accounts, a tough year. Even a guide who's hunting and looking daily and stays on the birds as much as anyone admits to growing tired of cancelling charters.

I want to reitterate that I don't think they are THE reason ducks are scarce up here, but I think it's possible that a growing number of birds are passing up places further north because of a lack of habitat or in some cases pressure, and are finding their way there. From a flyway standpoint it makes sense. I'm having a hard time finding older harvest check station data for places when they used to do ariel surveys for a comparison but I think the steady upward trend in birds harvested to over 40,000 while birds per hunter remains steady suggests there are alot of birds are there year in and year out while elsewhere, not so much....as if anyone questioned that.

The question is how many, and how many other places are seeing less and less birds while the filter marshes see great numbers year in and year out. Before you scoff at the idea that 50,000 acres (slated to be close to 100,000 at completion) could have an effect on bird migration and where birds end up, consider that there is a 2,000 acre property in Arkansas that was said at one time to have as many as 25% of Arkansas ducks using it. To this day I've read of 200,000 ducks being there...old numbers go as high as half a million.
