elbow tackle question

Planning on an elbow trip this winter and was wondering in there was a "standard" lead weight size? 10oz? I understand the current is an issue there but think we would go when it is not as strong. Also when you are using a chicken rig what type of circle hook are used? offset eye or straight? Thanks in advance.

    What are you targeting?

If you're going to make that run be prepared. I'd have 6, 8, 10 and 12's and maybe a few 16's. I'm not a chicken rig guy but I'd use a offset circle. Both are legal in federal waters.

Typically, I keep set ups with 40, 50, 60 and 80 pound main line. On my boat I carry 20lb to 120lb leader material.

In ~175'- ~250' we fish 10s & 12s most of the time depending on current & bait size... If we need 16s (due to current) it ain't much fun...

well that gets me started. will be fishing for snapper and jigging for some AJ. My wife likes to use a chicken rig so trying to optimize for her. Until she starts to out fish me. Trying to keep from bring lots of everything. But will have a least some of most things. Thinking that I will start with 65# braid with a similar top shot and smaller leader.

Just out of curiosity, why the Elbow in the winter? What size boat?

6-8 oz butterfly jigs with 50-65 lb braid set-ups.
60-80 lb on your conventional bottom set-ups
A few smaller rigs for snapps.
As long as you stay away from the full and new moons you should be fine using 6-8 oz leads. Long leaders and live baits for your grouper.
May want to stop and grab a few runners on the way out because there are still some Tuna, and Hooters swimming around out there.
    Good luck and be safe.
