Artificial grass

Thinking about putting in some artificial grass off of the pool area. Has anyone ever seen it in a residential yard?

It's catching on in the Keys more regularly with water restrictions and thru environmental ed and awareness. Looks good on all the places i'be seen it.

On the side next to the Trans Am on blocks. Might put it under the clothesline to. Old lady is tired of stepping in mud .

Seriously, some of the new stuff looks pretty good, in brochures any way. My biggest concern is the dogs . Will their crap wash through or will i have to pick it up?

I some some on a Gulf front home on Belaire Beach. It looked good. I saw some a few houses down that looked like green indoor/outdoor carpet.

I would imagine the turf getting super hot in the day. That would be a pain

I'm redoing my pool now, and got rid of most of the patio deck. Gonna put grass next to it. I've been considering zoysia, but it's expensive, and hard to maintain. Artificial is an option too, but even way more expensive.

How much more expensive? Remember that you hardly have to maintain it either.

Artificial grass out here is more popular than real stuff.

They make some that looks and feels like real grass. The only way to tell is to get down and look real close at it, or try to pick some. lol

Not sure what type it is, but it is convincing.

Unless they make artificial grass that has artifical weeds and looks like it has not been cut in 3 weeks, my neighbors would know.

No its not, unless you have a female dog... like me. For me it was like $50 more for the entire back yard. It has been great, looks great and has been easier than St. Augustine. The only problem is the dog pee. Turns it yellow, and if she goes in the same spot over and over it will kill that patch. Other than that its been great. Ok in the shade, and great in the sun.

Up here Zoysia is 25% more expensive than St. Augustine, but it is very good stuff.

I also was looking into it for the doggie section of the yard. It can be washed down and cleaned with Simple Green. I jut have to bite the bullet and do it!!!! It is going to be so much better as there is not much sun where the dogs go and it just won't grow grass so the dogs are constantly tracking mud in.

Bahia is the grass for Fl as I've never watered it and its green all summer. If you want a green lawn in winter when it dies plant some rye grass. Plus when you let it grow to seed in the summer you only have to mow once every two weeks.

A friend of mine recently did his front yard with artificial. I went and got a photo of it. I'm trying to reach him and find out how much. Looks nice!

Really????? I always thought zoysia was one of those "set it and forget it" types of grasses.

i love the way that artificial stuff looks and would consider it in the future. is the "mat" for it perforated so rainwater can run down through it? also, i have dogs so id need to be able to "water in" their poo. is that possible?

I have it in my backyard
    Its maintenance free really.
If the dog poops or pees you can hose it. It has drain holes throughout (I think 8" square or something I forget. We have a dog who won't poo or pee on it so its fine. But my son does.
You do have to rake, blow, pickup leaves and branches.
Depending on the product (and installer) it runs from @ $5-6 sq ft to well over $12 for some premium stuff and custom installs.
Regardless of which you get....you don't mistake it for real grass.
Ours has multi -color blades and blade heights. Browns and greens, it sort of takes the edge off that in your face all green look. Although I did like the all green from the aesthetic angle, but it was still sooooooooooo green.
Some products are very soft and some are more "plasticy" some have a greater face weight IE more actual grass per sq inch, with a lower grade backing(lighter), less face weight with higher grade backing (IE heavier), and their are combinations in between.
It installs just like carpet and you will have seams. A very good installer of course will minimize the number of seams and hide the ones you do have well (just like a indoor carpet guy)
It does get hot in direct sun. Not too bad for us, since the reason we went with it is our daily sun is minimal due to large oak canopy. But if your a beach guy who can walk across black tarvie roads or hot white sand in bare feet.........its not as bad as that.
Installation say on a 1000 sq ft with minimal round anlges and bedding areas is an easy 2 day job.In fact after I saw how they did mine..........I was pissed I paid to have it installed it was that simple.
Here are a couple pics at 95% completion:

Good info . Thanks! Sounds like pets are not an issue and it drains 6" of rain per hour. :Rockon
