Thinking of Buying a Kindle - What Say you?

DemereDemere Posts: 1,463 Officer
I read a lot. Looking at the new Kindle to reduce cost and the clutter of tons of books around the house. Also looks like traveling will be easier (less bulk). I know there are competing products. I am technologically challenged and wonder what those of you with some experience with tablets, etc think. Kindle or something else?

I use my IPad to read Kindle Books/Magazines/News Paper. At first I didn't think I'd like it but really is my preferred way to read. Never worried about having enough light, always know where the book is and where you stopped reading and a dictionary at hand for those unfamiliar words.

Any tablet will probably do. I just use the IPad because it does that and more. If all you want to do is browse and read the Kindle should work fine.

I just bought a Kindle, maybe a month ago. After a couple of weeks of forced usage, I would rather use the Kindle app on my iPad or desktop for almost all situations. I did take the Kindle on a flight a few weeks ago, and it was easier to hold and read than my iPad, which I also had with me.

I also use the Kindle app on my iPad. That's basically the only time I use the iPad actually.

Exactly. We have a Samsung and an iPad and they both will do just fine as will the Kindle.

son has the kindle, we have the iPad. Can't stand using the kindle and avoid it unless he's having problems with something.

Don't know if the Nexus is better or not. It might just be Amazon's stuff that makes it so bad.

For those that say a tablet will work just as well as a Kindle for reading, what about in bright daylight/sunshine?

My wife has an Ipad, Kindle Fire, and Kindle PaperWhite. The Kindle PaperWhite is much lighter and FAR FAR easier to read in bright light situations.

We looked at the kindle and bought a Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7.0. I'm gonna get a 10.1 soon

It's just a fad. You'll be selling it for $5 at garage sale next month.

I have a couple of Kindles and it really depends on what you want to do with one. For reading books the orginial kindle is best because it is small (approximately the size of a paperback) and there is no washout of the screen when outside. So, if you are going to lay around a pool for example the orginal Kindle is perfect. I also have a Kindle Fire HD and I like it for surfing the net etc when traveling and it is much easier to travel with than a lap top for example because it is small enough to leave in my backpack when going through security and doesn't have to be sent through separately as a lap top does. The screen size is 8.9" and it does washout when in the sunlight.

I actually will take both devices when I trave to C.R. for example and have a Wi Fi app and memory card that sends pictrues from my camera directly to my Kindle Fire. I can also send and receive free text messages via it.

I don't have an I Pad so am unqualified to address it in comparasion to a Kindle.

I have a Kindle Fire, my wife has an I Pad. I like the Kindle waaay better for reading books (pretty much the only thing I use it for). A whole pile cheaper too.

I read a lot. Last year I put 62 books on my Kindle. It's great, very convenient, easy to use and most libraries have a link to borrow from. Although, I buy most of my E books, I reread. In poke county there are two books-a-million (both a 30 minute drive for me) and a few used book stores, it's great to log on and download 5 or 6 books in a few minutes for a months worth of reading. I can't say enough good things about the kindle.
I also tried a kindle fire and returned it. It was nice when it worked but that wasn't often.

I have to agree with most, but for the price the kindle paper white is best for reading books.... My iPad 2 works great, but after a while it gets heavy. Do it all, the iPad or similar no comparison. I'm a mac user, so the iPad works better for me. I'm looking very hard at the new nexus, small screen $230 range(great reviews), just be cause of the price. LOL, but the iPad mini for travel and just what ever, is hard to beat.

I agree with Parker 100%, I have both and the reason to keep the old school Kindle is you can read for 30 days on one charge, the battery life on the old screen for books is almost NIL. Love my Fire HD, easy to use, great picture, nice sound.

The original Kindle was the best reader I've ever had. The screen was optimized for reading and was better than looking at print on paper. I could go at least a week between charges. After my kids destroyed that one, I bought a Kindle Fire. Not nearly as good for reading but so much more versatile than the Kindle reader. I returned the Fire after a while because of charging problems. I did that twice actually, but Amazon's return policy is so good, it wasn't a bother. I've since upgraded to the Kindle 8.9. The 8.9 is geared more toward watching video and has a great screen. The thing is a battery hog though and sometimes it fails to charge when plugged in overnight. App availability is not nearly as good as iPad or Android devices. The low price and great customer service has kept me in the Kindle camp.

Thanks for all the great comments. They really made a difference. I just ordered the Kindle Paperwhite 3G (new model due out Nov 5th). I'm really looking forward to all the benefits of this device. Looks like it will pay for itself pretty quickly vs buying regular books.

I like my Kindle Fire. I also enjoy the Kindle reading app for my I phone, I pad, Computer, and Mac.

My mother has the Kindle with the eInk, my wife a Nook and MIL I gave my Kindle to. To think a Kindle is just a reader is silly. It's a tablet. Yes it's locked to Amazon stores but the ipad is locked iTunes.
I use my Lattitude 10 with Windows, USB ports, HDMI, SD charges via microUSB etc.I had to get adapters to use it with VGA projectors but I will stop carrying my full notebook very soon.

That iPad is doing a bang up job. Very responsive and doesn't make you look like a big dumb Grimmace at all. /sarcasm

    That's nice.

Have you tried a Kindle PaperWhite? The Kindle PaperWhite is much lighter and FAR FAR easier to read in bright light situations. I have experience with the original Kindle, Kindle Fire, Apple IPad, and Kindle PaperWhite. For _reading_ purposes the PaperWhite rules.

Haven't used a Kindle but use the iPad outside without issue. One does have to be smart enough to change the brightness though, so that rules out a lot of folks on here. I do agree with the annoying weight of the iPad and am looking forward to the iPad Air that comes out tomorrow. I just don't see the point in buying a kindle too, when my iPad does it all.

New updated Mavericks on the macbook pro gave me this app called iBooks. Why buy a second device just to read books?
