Early mullet run report August 28, 2011

For all you mullet run junkies our time has arrived a little early this year. I have been seeing scattered mullet schools coming by Singer Island for the past two weeks. Late yesterday there were loads off mullet outside of the surf (not my favorite while wave riding) and this AM they were tight to the beach after the swell evaporated overnight. The bite died as soon as the sun cleared the horizon but in the short window we had my son and I caught several jacks (largest about 15 lbs), ladyfish, a bluefish and a large spanish mackerel. We saw numerous tarpon but had no luck with them. I did not see any snook. The water is still very sandy. These were good size pods of mullet and other assorted bait pushing south.

Mullet is one of the best live baits out there and usually pretty easy to get.

Spent some time in Ocean Ridge today and they are moving through north to south in large schools. They look like the bigger black mullet right now but there were jacks, tarpon, and snook chasing them. My son caught a 26 inch snook on a dead mullet sitting on the bottom. I agree, Irene gave them an early push. I also noticed that after the son went down it felt like fall was moving in quick!

I'm up in Jacksonville on the St Johns River and they are stacked up. I can tell you guys in the South you will be having the best mullet run I have ever seen. Right before the storm they really started to bunch together and the big fish have found them.

They were running thick 4 weeks ago in Ft.Pierce, I have never seen it that early before.
But water was brown on the beach yesterday with none to be found.

I was out in the Indian River in Vero yesterday and the mullet were in good numbers

worked on a boat in Tequesta today on the ICW and they were getting crushed by snook the entire 4 hours I was there.

I'm seeing them schooling in Boca ICW. Trying out a new reel and just messing around I nailed a very nice snook who inhaled an artificial I dragged through a small school. Tide was going out, about 5pm from a dock. Nice surprise! Sorry no pic.

No mullet on the beach at MacArthur Beach this afternoon. There was a fair amount on the inside but nothing busting them.

I have seen them every night in my canal in North Broward. I caught a dozen for tomorrow night's opening ceremony.

anyone else seeing mullet from west palm to jupiter?? Just curious if they are showing up in big numbers yet.. haven't see a ton around

Seems like the mullet have thinned out since Irene passed. I've seen some in the canals around Boynton but not much in the main part of the ICW. It's still early so they'll pick up. We just need another east coast storm to push them down this way...
