How to Throw a Large Cast Net Without Using your Teeth

Albino TarponAlbino Tarpon Posts: 12 Greenhorn
Hello Everyone,

I made a video on how to throw a cast net without having to put it in your mouth. It is not a common way fishermen typically throw a net but it opens the net beautifully. Throwing the cast net this way works with cast nets of all sizes, especially larger ones. Hope this video helps you black out your live wells after only one cast. If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks for posting, looks good. I was just talking to a neighbor about getting the lead out of ones mouth while throwing in the front yard the other day. We both agreed we should youtube it but haven't gotten around to it yet. I will give your way a try when I get home.

Thanks guys! Spotsgonefishin', it may take a few practice throws but once you get the hang of it, you will keep more teeth in your mouth and stay drier during the process of catching bait! Has anyone lost a tooth while throwing a cast net?

Been using teeth for 30 years and I have them all. I think once you learn a method that works well, it's tough to switch to something else.

When you are down to one tooth, I wouldn't risk throwing the net with it. I wouldn't throw using your dentures either.

Very nice!! I will have to try it this way. My wife hates when I put the lead line in my mouth.

Nicely made video. Been throwing a net with my teeth for many years. But I threw it today, your way while throwing for mullet and I have to say it works very well.

Funny story actually. I have braces and when I first got them I used to hold the net in my mouth when throwing it and one day it got caught on a bracket and i threw it and let's just say it was not fun...

Very nice. Thanks for posting. Did you come up with this method? Also what size net are you throwing in the video? Looks like a 12?

GitchaPull: I did not come up with this method of throwing the cast net. Its been passed down for at least two generations in my family. I believe the net in the video is 10ft. However, I have not had a problem throwing 12ft and 14ft nets.

Wading in 2' of water or off a boat could prove to be more challenging with this method. But but a nice throw off the beach! Looks bigger than 10' net.

I throw the net off a boat at least 80% of the time. When wading, just shorten the segment of the net that is not coiled up. I said two and a half feet in the video but you can vary it. Shortening it will allow you to throw the net while wading and will also allow you to throw the net farther. Hope this helps.

Slick. I like it. I might have to try that. In fact, I will try it because I love to try new things. Thanks for sharing.

As far as throwing the net with the lead line in your mouth, I don't see the problem. So long as the actual pieces of lead aren't in your mouth and your don't have a large mouthful of net inside your mouth, it shouldn't rip out any teeth.

Going to have to give it a shot with my 10 footer, looks fairly easy. Thanks!

****, clearly I'm not good with new techniques. I made about 10 throws with no success. The front of the net comes out great but the back of the net is going out too. The back goes about half as far as the front and lands underneath (if that makes any sense). It's getting dark and starting to rain. I'll give it another try tomorrow.

Any hints on emptying a big net?

A little different but I believe it's easier because it rests on your shoulder rather than elbow

I use the same exact method but I invert my hand while holding the other 3rd of the net. This is me throwing a 14 footer

I like this thread and the different techniques for cast netting being discussed... Out of all the techniques discussed so far, I still favor the original post simply because the net is kept off the main part of the body and is only on the arm. Catching bait is usually the first part of a day's fishing, and I do not care to be soaking wet for the remainder of the morning, especially if bait is difficult to find

Although I don't use my teeth now with how I usually toss it, I really like the look of this technique that you demonstrated. Definitely going to try this method as my net is big and heavy.

Thanks for taking the time to film and post this. Nice clear directions and great visuals with the different angles. Great job!

Has anyone ever tried those plastic disks, where you load the net into it and throw like a frisbee? It looks ridiculous and would be super heavy.
