Resort world, my view

I am not a local, but I am a property owner. I have a lot of ties to Bimini and one local that calls me his brother and vice versa. I would and have done anything for him and received the same in return. The govt of nassua, wether corrupt or intelligent believes it knows what is best for its citizens and has made the final decisions long ago. I have been to the casino four times and aboard the ship twice. Keep your friends closer and enemies closer. From what I have gathered, this company will not stop till they get it right, they don't quite and they certainly have the money as a 46 billion capitalized company. What does this mean to the people that know Bimini from days past? IMHO, room nights will be harder to come by! there will be a lot more people and with that increased pressure on resources. Probably the best way to put it is history always repeats itself. Take the keys to whatever year you want and that is where Bimini is now. Just my two cents.

Fact is as you stated, Genting has the money to keep trying until they get it right or bail out. Unfortunately Genting apparently does not recognize what made Bimini what it is today. An,,,their vision of the future is ill advised and step are not being taken in the right order.

The pelagic resources will be there if international fishing is controlled carefully across our Oceans, but the bottom resources, lobster, conch and bottom fish will suffer greatly. All you have to do is look at an aerial of the entire Western Bank. The only viable mangrove habitat which is so important to many species, is centered at North Bimini. This was a marine treasure and should have been protected.

The development will impact the livelihood of the fisherman in Bimini, but it will be a slow decline.

Hopefully over time, the Biminites can adjust to the new normal which is the Latin hip hop capital of the NW Caribbean. Bimini will be what Cuba would have been with the embargo lifted only crammed into a very small fish bowl.

Genting will kill what the the people are coming to see and experience.

Fact is, not many of the intelligent Biminites want this. If they did, they would be living in Nassau.

What a myopic view you have of things; it's always those damned Cubans for you. What a terrible ride it must be for you when hate is at the wheel.

It sickens me to see whats happening in Bimini right now. I"ve been visiting for 20 something odd years and never have I seen the island change as much as it has. What really ticks me off is all my Bimini friends were promised loads of visitors from the cruise ship, and none of them even venture outside the gates of Resort World.

Even more sickening is opening up my MSN page and seeing Bimini the hidden destination on the front page..Genting is pumping quite of bit of money into this island, and media for PR.

We can only hope that Resort World listens to the people of bimini.

Except for a very select few, the locals have had no input. The select few.? Look at the tram operator. Did he just happen to have a few trams when the ship showed up? The rate of expansion at the airport is incredible. They are looking to get 737's in there. Third hand info is land is being bought up quickly and national chains are looking to get in. I have always said history repeats it's self . Want to see the future of Bimini? Look at the past of genting. Imagine the lobster or sponge guys that were against the port of Miami way back when and you have us today.

Yes we also are property owners also but for one reason only, our love for Bimini and of course its people. Do we like what we see, do we like what's happening and do we like what's still to come, absolutely not. Sad to see this beautiful island head in this direction but most of all we feel sorry for its people who have been ignored and pushed aside for the quest of greed.
We are only visitors. What about the Biminites who are having all this just jammed down their throat threatening their way of life and culture. Many have spoken but no one is being heard.

As with my situation that the natives were "on my side", sadly, I see a common factor in this situation. None willing to get involved. None willing to get off their dead transoms and actually speak up good and loud. Yeah i hear the grumblings and disenchantment in their voices but don't see them rally and try to put up a fight.
My own crew were about to lose a real cake job. I paid over the top and seldom had to push them. I rigged the baits, set the spread, drove the boat, avoided most of the weeds, was there to do the leader, I cleaned the fish and did all the hard cleaning of the boat. I gave them the tip and often added some if it was short of what they should have got. When the poo hit the prop they cried foul but neither of them got off their duff to talk to their local officials about it or try to complain. Same with other friends who stood to lose. Not one "did" a thing. I see a couple you tube tapes out there of people unhappy but i don't see them making noise to their officials to fix it. Without that simple step they will be walked on over and over...

I mention the facts of Bimini and now I'm a bigot..........Look at RW adds, it is geared to the Latin Hip Hop community and nothing else. And those are facts, also nothing else....

I have paid my due to that Island and I feel I can speak my mind. YOu have no idea what actions I have taken to try to influence an environmentally compatible development.

For instance, I could have mobilized a dive and coral transplant crew with 5 days notice to relocate all of the corals that are being buried at Three Sisters and It would not have cost $100,000. And I would venture to guess that I have more experience on that type of work than almost anyone available! When the University of Miami research ship Columbus Iselin crashed into Looe Key, guess who the marine sanctuary called to do the repair work and clean up.

These RW people just either don't care or don't understand. Coral transplants could have gone a long way in the PR problems of Genting.

They aren't saying anything because the last time someone spoke out loudly about the island, he was murdered. Biminites are not stupid.

Ron ,I follow resort world's blog and announcements. Every single weekend a Latin DJ is spinning on the Resort World boat. I've yet to see them bring in anything but. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but anyone who claims Resort World isn't marketing to the Latin crowd, and the Latin crowd only, is silly.

Honestly friends have told me at night this turns into a free for all drug boat. You can pretty much buy any type of drug on this boat for the night cruise. Its a shame.
  • Maybe instead of free food, its free Moly?

Genting apparently does not recognize what made Bimini what it is today. An,,,their vision of the future is ill advised and step are not being taken in the right order.

In my opinion, Genting doesn't care what made Bimini what it is today. To them it's a piece of real estate with the right location (close to large population base) and right laws (gambling, lax environmental control, friendly government).

You know how cruise ships started buying up "private islands" near their ports to give passengers an excursion? This is nearly the same concept except on a much larger scale. Genting is "privatizing" Bimini and molding it into what they think will bring in the most people and return the largest profits.

Sadly, the fishing, diving, family crowd hasn't been enough to make Bimini prosperous in the last 10 years. Plenty of reasons for that, but it's a fact. Now the government is going to try a different plan. I HATE it and personally will limit my time on the North Island. That said, from and economic stand point, it could work. If the RW brings more people to the island in a week than had visited in a month, there has to be a boost to the economy.......even in Alice town. This will be particularly true during winter months when the fisherman are somewhere else.

Hmm.....I remember as a kid in the 80's Jack Tar Village on West End seemed to be exclusively marketed to every trailer park in Texas. I kind of enjoyed it actually.
