Here's the story
If you're headed to Bunche Beach in Fort Myers, keep an eye on your belongings...there is a thief on the loose! A woman has her wallet stolen while at the beach Monday -- by a raccoon.
Headed back into the Gulf waters off Bunche Beach, a Kemp's Ridley sea turtle named Tampa Red was set to be the star as she returned home. Dozens of people like Danielle Araica came to watch.
"I wanted to have a nice experience for my children and all this chaos happened," said Danielle Araica.
The Fort Myers woman and her two daughters were in the water when she had an unexpected encounter.
"I saw the raccoon in my bag, so I start running like a crazy woman," Araica said.
A furry bandit took off with her bright pink wallet.
"I see him with the wallet in his mouth…she ran into the bushes, so I was praying she dropped my wallet," Araica said.
Araica says the masked thief dropped her wallet off in the woods and a little boy went and got it for her.
"I have some scratches and holes on my wallet now, but it's back and its safe," Araica said.
We spotted a raccoon running around the brush near the beach. It quickly darted away from our cameras and disappeared into the woods.
"She knew what she wanted. She went right in there and got it," Araica said.
The experience has left Araica wondering why the raccoon would take off with her clutch. All she had in her bag was sunscreen, clothes and towels. No food.
"It was a trained raccoon to go steal money or wallets out of women's bags that was the theory we came up with at the beach," Araica said.
