Wow what a busy season this has been. Lots and lots of folks out on the water enjoying quality time with family and friends and getting some of the best seafood that the gulf has to offer. The scalloping in Crystal River and Homosassa has been great with limit after limit coming in every day. We have been targeting water depth of 4 to 6 feet and we are having great success even with the cloudy overcast skies. I have started to go further south around the bird rack north of the Homosassa channel on the days that we have overcast since the water clarity is very good down there nearly all the time.
The mangrove snapper fishing seems to be pretty good on the nearshore rock piles. We have been getting some nice ones on live shrimp on a 2/0 circle hook and a small split shot freelined back in the chum line. I have been saving some of the scallop guts and freezing them in large ziplock bags and using them for chum. This seems to make those mangos go crazy behind the boat.
If you plan on getting out there this week, keep a close eye on the weather because the storms come in fast. Be safe and have fun.
Good deal, saw you Friday going out, you were behind me in the river, I was on my way out to look for derelict traps.
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.
We went out of Crystal River on Saturday and Sunday and limited out both days. Stopped first right out of crystal river then ran south. Definitely did better south. Right around the slack tide was the time to be out there. Stuck a nice 18" flounder on Sunday, it was about 2 hours before low tide. He was laying on some grass, just on the edge of a little patch of bottom. Two others in my crew saw some and they weren't prepared. They also saw a couple of sheepsheads.
Took the family out with Captain Mario Sunday morning and had a blast on our first scalloping trip. My kids had a great time and told me they can't wait to go back! What a great addition to our usual fishing routine. Had a batch for dinner tonight, delicious! Thanks Captain Mario.
A big thanks to Capt Lex on Sunday for the last minute scheduling for my doubles trip. I will definitely call you again for the next one. Hopefully I will be able to give you a little more than 12 hours notice next time. :grin
