That sucks. That's a hell of a lot of firemen to lose in one day.

My son a firefighter/paramedic spent an intensive week of training for fighting forest fires. His take after the week was that fighting forest fires on mountains was probably the most dangerous job a firefighter would have to do. He decided after that week of training not to volunteer out west. Priorities change when you become a Dad.

That's funny - you have always struck me as not worthy of carrying a hotshot's water.

    Terrible loss.
Why did they not just let the fire burn?

They were a hot shot crew. The best that do the most dangerous jobs. Yarnell is very rugged. RIP

I attended a three day introductory course regarding fighting forest fires, these guys are the real deal. As Hickory eluded to, I dont think many of us (myself included) could hack what they do. Airdropped into a zone with a platzky (SP) then pic miles of trail to help stop the fires. Truly under appreciatted and underpaid. RIP brothers.....

Im sorry, i just get sick and tired of when folks get killed how the media grandizes them. To call these hot shot elite fireman seems to demean the real fire fighters. Elite is crash and salvage at the airport or at the 1000 mega watt power plant. Just because they jump to me means absolutely nothing. To thing that those shelters will save in a mass conflag is ****. To call a fire fighter equiped with a shovel or axe elite is like calling the salvation army an army. They died, it happens....what are all you people, druids?

I was a wildland firefighter for eight seasons and to call the hotshots anything less than hardcore is an understatement. On foot in remote areas, always frontline with no support. All their gear on their back in the worst conditions out there. They pay the price for our poor planning in the wildland/urban interface. They died trying to protect homes - not lives and that could have been prevented with proper vegetation management.

    RIP

There are over 1250 articles written by newspaper writers on google news now about this.....All use the words "elite". As if the only time they have ever heard of smoke jumpers is when the news broke sunday afternoon that they lost a squad. There is so much to learn about fire science, so much to learn about industrial systems, so much to learn about all the hundreds of other angles involving stuff......And then apply it when the SHTF

When you show up with a back pack and good intentions to fight the beast and you lose your are not elite. Just because you do some push-ups and jump out the door doesnt make you elite.....Its like saying chinese bugle charges were elite....No they weren't.

IMHO let these nature areas burn, it is part of natures beauty and sorry to the people that lose property, they need to take the good with the bad. People find these wierd, ubscure occupations as a way to find indenty. If I cant get a dozer in there, if I cant find water to put on it and its all tinder dry, I shall be elite and win and keep my life. Its like these clowns that pack hand tools into yellow stone and say they are in construction and elite! I'm like no way are you elite, did you notice the airport I built, the highway, the water treatment plant? you wouldnt even be elite in the time of the pilgrims and they would call me a god-king.

hippys failing badly. Whale savers tv show with the tragic ending we all wait to see. Sorry its the truth.

hard core doesnt make you elite....You might just ride a skateboard and hang with cyclist and say dude, that is hard core.

Elite or not, I agree with the notion of letting the **** thing burn if no human lives are in danger. Homes can be rebuilt, the forest will recover, human lives and the loses of their families can't be replaced.

Agreed - a lot of it could be prevented with more fire resistant construction and improved vegetation management as well.

We are talking about people that were burned alive attempting to serve the greater good. Try to keep that in mind.
