What the dumbest thing you ever witnessed?

old thompsonold thompson Posts: 6,497 Officer
So, this dude is cutting with an oxygen/acetylene torch and his pant leg caught some slag. No big deal but it looked like he was having trouble patting it out so I asked him if he needs a hand. He says "no, I got it" and proceeds to turn on his oxygen and try to blow the flames out.

:willynilly

It might have worked if he had purged the line first, he didn't. Third degree burns are ugly.

What is the most exciting, dazzling display of ignorance you have seen?

In PE class in high school...

This big, goofy guy is by himself on the edge of the baseball field and hitting tennis balls with an aluminum baseball bat into the neighborhood that bordered the school. He runs out of tennis balls and starts to make his way back to the class and finds a rubber basketball.

He picks that ball up, tosses high into the air, and takes a home run swing. He makes perfect contact, and that bat rebounds off the basketball right back into his face. I don't think the basketball went farther than 5 feet.

He went down immediately, like a sack of potatoes!! I'll never forget the sound of the bat hitting the ball and then his face. It was a very quick "thud-crack" sound. I ran over to him and he was out cold, but his face was already severely swollen.

Aside from him hurting himself, which i hated to see, It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

When I was a teen I worked on a party boat. Many weekdays during the summer we would not have enough people to run a trip so we would do maintenance on the boat. The first mate was a dumb as dirt 30 something year old fresh out of a double wide. One day we were cleaning the bilge when he said he could smell gas in the bilge water. Being that he was the kind of guy that always had a cigarette hanging out of his face, he did what came natural. He used his lighter to see if he could find where the gas was coming from! Lucky for him, I guess, the bilge was filled with fumes and a large ball of fire blasted out of the open hatches. He emerged with very little hair left on his head, face, arms, and legs. The explosion was over in a flash and he had some good burns on his head where his hair had burned off including some nasty blisters and hanging skin.

Sadly, I have another friend who cleaned oil tankers so they could be X-rayed. This doesn't fall under dumb, but goes along with the above story. He was climbing down inside one of the tanks when an explosion occurred for some reason. He was burned over 80% of his body and fell something like 30 feet off the latter he was on to the bottom of the hold.
He lived and now lives very well due to his settlement, but wouldn't go through what he did for the money.

Pretty sure watching the idiot get out of his station wagon to unhook his boat, which was already launched, at the 15 St ramps in Ft Laud, only to them attempt to stop said vehicle from rolling into the drink in neutral. His attempts were fruitless.

At Loch Loosa one day I saw an old man backing down a little v hull in a pos cadillac. His younger Asian bride was in the boat ready to drive it off the trailer. Problem was, he forgot to take the rear straps off, and backed it so far the water came over the trandom. Seeing this, she jumped overboard as the extra weight of the water filled boat slowly pulled the caddy in the water.

Some guys backed their truck down and hooked a strap to his bumper. They saved the caddy/boat but **** near tore his bumper off.

We caught the hell out of specks too. All in all it was a good day.

Half of the stories involve people smoking, I guess most smokers aren't too smart to start with.

I was riding ATVs with a group of guys one night when one of the 4-wheelers quit. The rider thought he might be out of gas, and since it was pitch black out he used his lighter to look into his gas tank. Apparently, he WAS NOT out of gas!!! He came out of it OK with just singed hair for the most part but the bike was destroyed....

i was directly affected by someone else's stupidity does that count? :grin

i used to build gas stations.. we would have to rip the old tanks up and scrap them out.. before you could scrap em, you had to cut a good sized hole in em, get in there and remove the tank sludge.. theres a little instrument that tests the levels of volatile gases in the air.. long story short, the dude checked it and gave me the thumbs up, safe to cut into.. you have to drill a couple holes first in order to work a sawzall blade in there to cut your hole out.. i made penetration on the first drill hole and wallowed the bit around a little bit, and watched two tiny sparks come off the end of the bit.. the tank instantly ignited, and was rumbling and dancing with me right on the end of it .. to see a 10000 gallon steel tank quaking and rocking like that was insane.. needless to say i hauled ****, with the drill still hanging in the end of the tank.. luckily, the excavator guy who pulled it accidentally punched a few holes in the side, that along with the few open bungs on the top of the tank allowed the pressure to escape without a catastrophic explosion, which i would have been the direct recipient of, seeing as how the ends of the tanks are where the blowout occurs :)

the dumb MF who had the meter had forgotten to calibrate it... and almost cost 4 people thier life.. can you say, ****?
